Re: Big Fat Surprise
Pug, have you read the book? I felt it was a thorough, thoughtful look at our food history. If anything, the low-fat studies and data (Ancel Keys) should be revisited and questioned. My guess is that any traditional diet (low or high fat and limited processed foods) would be better than what the ...

Annuities
I'm twenty or so years from retirement and have been a PP follower for the last 5 years. I've been happy with the results. Has anyone explored annuities? I've been leery of them in the past due to their high costs, surrender fees and general bad reputation. However, I noticed that Vanguard and F...

Michelin X-Ice Xi3
We had a discussion several months ago about winter tires and I thought I'd provide some feedback. We get about 300" of snow where I live so winter tires are a necessity. For anyone looking for a great all-around winter tire, consider the Michelin X-Ice Xi3's. I've only had them on my car for...

Re: Transcendental Meditation
That's excellent Benko. Thanks for reposting. I've had very good results with Natural Stress Relief. It is a stripped-down version of TM without the cost. I find it highly effective and it's a technique you can learn and do on your own. For a more comprehensive approach, consider Vipassana (Insig...

Thanks for all of the feedback. I'm going with the Nokian - R's and just located a dealer nearby.

Snow tires
Any tire experts out there? I would like to fit my 09 Audi with a dedicated snow tire this season. I'm considering Bridgestone Blizzaks, Michelin X-ice or Nokians. Any advice on these brands would be greatly appreciated.

Re: The Truth About Exercise
Yes, it is effective but very, very strenuous. I did the SuperSlow program for over a year before relocating. It is a once-weekly, 20 minute workout that works every muscle group in the body to failure, then a few seconds beyond. I would highly recommend it. Google Arthur Jones, an interesting c...

Re: Multifactorial Hormesis [PowerPoint]
Has anyone practiced cold water therapy for hormesis? A gym I recently visited had contrast pools. The cold one was 48 deg. and the adjoining whirlpool was 115. I was told by a trainer to start with cold (30 seconds) then immediately go to hot tub for 2 minutes and repeat this several times. Any re...

Re: Really Good Meals
Benko is correct about the SousVide. The temps are very low. We cook our steaks at 134 degrees (medium rare) for about an hour minimum, depending on the cut thickness. We've found it to be a very convenient way of cooking. Most foods cannot be overcooked so you can season food, add butter to bag,...

Re: Really Good Meals
We've gotten great use out of our SousVide machine. It's a water immersion cooker. Previously, they could only be found in restaurants. For steaks (if you like rare or medium rare), seafood and various egg dishes, it's unparalleled. Get the demi.

Bad Pharma by Ben Goldacre
Highly recommended. A book that details the current drug approval process. If Goldacre is even half-right, it's a very troubling process. I was surprised to learn that a new drug could fail several trials, then pass one and be approved by the FDA (while the poor results of that very trial get burie...

Re: rent bubble or inflation coming?
Shilling is mostly bearish on equities but does recommend a couple of sectors (utilities, health care firms, consumer product companies). He feels they have the potential to pay substantial, regular dividends in the next decade. Might be worth considering in a VP.

Re: rent bubble or inflation coming?
Gary Shilling's 'The Age of Develeraging' (copyright 2011) makes a strong case for renting, even with the tax deductibility of mortgage interest. He's also very bullish on the 30 year bond.

Re: Any Subaru owners out there?
Thank you all for the good advice!
Craig: have you owned any Nokian Hakkapeliitas (winter tires). Crazy name and apparently a top-rated snow performer. I'll swap summer tires out so not looking for an all-season tire. Otherwise, the WRG looks very good.

Any Subaru owners out there?
I'm considering buying either the Outback or Forester? Looking for a safe, reliable vehicle that can handle lots of snow and weekly trips from central Colorado to Denver. I haven't owned one previously and know they have a strong, loyal following. Any pros or cons?

Re: Black Swans, Nassim Taleb and PP
MachineGhost, Benko has it right. Taleb recommends avoiding moderate exercise. For example, he believes that sprints combined with walking is more effective than jogging. Or, do a rigorous, brief weight-lifting session (he favors the deadlift) then rest completely for several days. Avoid the stri...

Black Swans, Nassim Taleb and PP
Having recently finished Craig and J.M.'s book, I'm convinced and have completely revamped my 401k plan to a PP through ETF funds. I'm already sleeping much better! There is excellent material on here and I like the outside of the box thinking. Are there any other followers of Nassim Taleb's work?...

Re: Rebalancing... Hormones?
Interesting Gumby, Dave Asprey has some very good recommendations. I also like Art DeVany. He is one of the original paleo practitioners and advocates a simple, natural food diet and exercise regime. He is not too doctrinaire like some in the paleo community. 'The Perfect Health Diet' by Paul Jami...
