We had a discussion several months ago about winter tires and I thought I'd provide some feedback. We get about 300" of snow where I live so winter tires are a necessity. For anyone looking for a great all-around winter tire, consider the Michelin X-Ice Xi3's. I've only had them on my car for two months and they have exceeded my expectations. I've driven in heavy-snow, ice and slush and they perform very, very well.
We have Bridgestone Blizzaks (WS-70s) on our other vehicle and they are also very good. I feel the blizzaks do better in deep snow but the Michelin's are more sure-footed on dry pavement and only slightly worse in deep snow. My gas mileage with the X-Ice's has been the same as my all-season Continental DWS (also a great tire).
