It Sounds Weird, But Right Now Is a Great Time To Start A PP
It's dips like this that are normally the best time to set up a permanent portfolio.
I doubt if many people will see it that way, but historically coming in at times like this has worked well.

I recently rebalanced my GLD and am going to be buying into other catagories (as well as picking up a new coin in a few days).
There have to be valleys if there are mountains, and the PP takes no exception to the trend.
Long bonds are affordable, and with the Market and price of Gold dropping, bargain hunters rejoice!

Definitely. I get a sort of sick thrill when one of the asset classes tanks.MediumTex wrote: It's dips like this that are normally the best time to set up a permanent portfolio.

I was traveling yesterday and unable to buy. Hopefully we get a small pull back today and plan to do so.

Why is everyone rebalancing? The move only moved my gold holdings a couple of percentage points (from like 26% to 23% of my PP).hrux wrote: I was traveling yesterday and unable to buy. Hopefully we get a small pull back today and plan to do so.

hrux is purchasing, not rebalancing. Some people are rebalancing because they've had their PP longer and their assets are more off-balance than a younger PP.Adam1226 wrote:Why is everyone rebalancing? Nothing I say should be construed as advice or expertise. I am only sharing opinions which may or may not be applicable in any given case.

Hmmm, I launched 25% of my net worth in yesterday... about 6 hrs before the dip was apparent. Clearly I need to get my chicken bones re-calibrated.
Hopefully seems like it's mostly recovered today (UK), so only one night tossing and turning.

Don't blame yourself: there are far darker and more potent forces at work here.gizmo_rat wrote: Hmmm, I launched 25% of my net worth in yesterday... about 6 hrs before the dip was apparent. Clearly I need to get my chicken bones re-calibrated.
I.e. Me.
I bought more gold on Tuesday, so of course there was a huge dip in the price. It was inevitable — that's how immutable Laws of the Universe work.
Sorry about that.
I also bought some gilts, so if you hang on a bit, there should be a major buying opportunity along in a moment...

I should be clear: I was rebalancing in an IRA, which has only a small sum total, therefore, rebalancing (may) occur for me more or less often. Also, It's been about 12-13 months since my last rebalance. For others, I suspect recent activity has had a negligible effect.Adam1226 wrote:Why is everyone rebalancing? Doubt it will matter long term. Don't watch day to day too closely.gizmo_rat wrote: Hmmm, I launched 25% of my net worth in yesterday... about 6 hrs before the dip was apparent. Clearly I need to get my chicken bones re-calibrated.

Thanks Adam, you're right of course, over the timescale that I hope to keep it 1 or 2 days is neither here or there... however I was glad to see it did recover really quickly.
During the time I've had exposure to the PP (only a few months) it has worked as advertised mostly due to an asset that I wouldn't have otherwise considered in my portfolio. Again over the time it'll be invested not significant, but very importent psychologically.
