The idea that advances in personal transportation are key to the improvement in human living conditions is a very American concept that presupposes that there will be vast distances between people and where they want to go. Instead of personal aircraft, feet do just fine as long as things are actually close enough together that people can walk there and when the route is beautiful enough that people want to (this is the key to attracting all the people who think they hate cities) This is not rocket science, but for some reason we Americans have a really tough time with it.
