Duterte, 71, surged to power with a landslide in May following an incendiary campaign in which he gleefully used foul language to disrespect authority figures, from his local political rivals to the pope.

He first came into conflict with US envoy Goldberg on the campaign trail, after he said he wanted to rape a “beautiful” Australian missionary who was sexually assaulted and murdered in a 1989 prison riot in Davao, the city he ran for two decades.

Goldberg and the Australian ambassador both strongly criticised these comments.

“He meddled during the elections, giving statements here and there. He was not supposed to do that,” Duterte said Friday.

I know a lot of Filipinos and they all seem to love Duterte. He made a much talked about speech over the weekend wherein he called out the mayors of several cities by name and told them to turn themselves in for drug trafficking.

Another thing he said is that when you insult the Americans they just end up giving you more money so you won't be mad at them so it is a good idea.

I don't know but Is the US Ambassador really gay? I know Obama has been putting openly gay people into Ambassador posts. A new way of sharing American values, I guess.

Evidently he gave a speach at a gay pride rally in Manila a couple years ago but he's never said he was gay.

In any case, he was originally appointed ambassador to Bolivia by GWB, which is where he was first accused of plotting against the host nation government. That was right after he was the coordinator for sanctions against North Korea. After he was kicked out of Bolivia, he became the Asst. Secretary of State for Intelligence and Research. THEN Obama appointed him ambassador in the Phillipines. So it's really not inconcievable he was doing some plottin.

I've seen Duterte labeled the Trump of the Philippines. I think the last time I read about him, in was in the context of a western woman who had been raped while serving as an aid worker in a prison. Duterte supposedly said that he would've been right there raping her with the rest of the good ol' boys. Class act. (Edit: already mentioned in the OP quote)

That's not really anyone's business, is it? And it doesn't have anything to do with American values except that we don't stone them to death...anymore.
