Are there any other purer plays than Cisco? It may seem almost too futuristic at first. But it's happening right now. For example, in Nice, France, the nation's fifth-largest city, Cisco has started connecting its transportation systems. It's installed a slew of new traffic detectors and parking sensors that drivers can connect to via apps on their smartphone to do things like avoid traffic and find free parking. Cisco plans to expand its smart city technology across 30 to 50 cities within the next five years. And there are all kinds of applications this networking technology can be used for on a smaller level. Clothing and footwear can be enhanced with sensors that detect vital signs. Home security systems can be connected to and managed directly from your phone. Home entertainment devices are connecting our TVs and gaming consoles to the Internet. The list goes on and on.
Over the next 10 years, Cisco reports it faces a $19 trillion potential opportunity.
