Anyone put their emergency fund in the PP?
My rule of thumb is that if the cash in my bank accounts exceeds $1000, then I must contribute to my PP.. I have well over 2 years of expenses saved in my PP, and $1000 is more than enough for emergencies since I'm single, debt-free, and frugal.. if I need anything more, I can just sell some PP assets and get it in a week or so (credit cards will carry the burden in that case.)

Check the cash sub-forum. Several posts on the topic of combining or keeping EF separate.blackomen wrote: My rule of thumb is that if the cash in my bank accounts exceeds $1000, then I must contribute to my PP.. I no longer have my emergency fund as part of my PP.
Why: My PP is entirely within a tax-deferred IRA so there is no good way to get that cash should it be needed.
If not for that, I would count my cash (everything but the checking account) as part of my PP.
Before I rolled my 401(k) into that IRA, my PP was distributed among various accounts and I definitely considered my cash as part of my PP.
Currently I have 80% as much cash outside my PP as I do inside...

If the Cash part of your PP has enough to cover minimally six, but ideally twelve, months of expenses I think you are good to go. But you want to be careful about relying on the broader PP assets. Although rare, it has occasionally seen some nasty short term volatility. I vaguely recall the peak to trough draw down, as opposed to the year to year for 2008 was pretty ugly. You don't want to be in a position where you have to sell other PP assets at a disadvantageous time. That can really hurt your long term returns.
