Spreadsheet to Track PP and VP?

Hi All,

I'm curious if anyone has a spreadsheet they'd mind sharing for tracking their PP / VP? I've been putting one together, and I've found mine is just messy. Any thoughts/help?

I use a Google spreadsheet for both PP and VP. GoogleFinance function gives me the NAV and that's all I need. The only thing I need to update is the number of shares for each mutual fund/stock/ETF. Works pretty good for me. Shows the ideal allocation and the current allocation and also the disbalance for each position (in $, %% and # of shares required to be bought/sold to get to the desired allocation)

If this is something that would work for you I can share an example.

I'm not sure how accurate/personal your PP information is but I am astounded at so many peoples' willingness to place what is seemingly personal and financial information out in the 'Google cloud'.  Maybe this is a point to be made on another thread or another forum but we are really losing our freedoms and civil liberties one by one.  Putting so much info in one place just makes it easier for big brother to invade your privacy.  I think our founding fathers would be aghast.  My guess is HB wouldn't think highly of it either.

I completely agree with you regarding placing personal info out online for the world. I would never share any personal information on a public forum. I was simply inquiring whether or not anyone has put together some sort of spreadsheet that they use to track the PP and VP. I've had challenges tracking both in a consolidated view.

Clive put together a great spreadsheet to track PP allocation, but I'm hoping to integrate both the PP and VP.

Any thoughts continue to be welcomed, and of course any spreadsheets/tools shared should NOT contain any personal information.

Not entirely sure I see the point of combining the PP and VP into one spreadsheet. Seems like a job for two separate spreadsheets.

Thanks Gumby. Yes I've seen that, thanks though.

Not critical to have the PP and VP combined, just think it is nice to see your total portfolio in one spreadsheet noting the allocations.

The reason I used Google spreadsheet is it allows to pull the share prices as well as performance details. So the only number you need to keep updated is the number of shares and everything else is calculated. Of course I wouldn't put the actual numbers I own, just some bogus numbers that allow to reflect the real %% allocation among the positions. What I especially like is that I can put a target balance in the Planned cell and see how many shares need to be bought/sold for every portfolio position.

Two ways:

1. MSN MoneyCentral Stock Quotes Excel Plug-In (Google for it, it may be discontinued?)

and

2. the Excel plug-in from a Yahoo! user:
http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/smf_addin/
(you have to join a Yahoo! group to get access)

I like Google Doc's "GoogleFinance()" function which pulls in near-real-time quotes the best of all.

I pull in forex and gold data with Excel 2003 using a "Web query": Create a worksheet for your raw data, go to Data menu, select Import External Data, then New Web Query, enter URL of the web page, select the data, viola(tm).

Doesn't work with all web pages, but I've had good luck with the German Yahoo Finance and a bullion dealer.
