Gold + VP Numismatic Twist

Post by Bean »

My physically gold so far is uncirculated and ungraded, that I put in air tites.  So when I lose them in a terrible boat accident, there is a chance I could find them in a good condition.

However, I am thinking about buying my new GAEs in slabbed...maybe even get myself a slabbed MS65 or higher Saint Gaudens.

Anyone try this to make gold a little more fun that a hunk of rare metal?

i have tried it pre-discovery of the pp and have had both good and bad luck with it, i got sold (by a skilled salesman) on some questionable gold buggery ideas about the protection numismatic provides and the better returns it can generate, the first time was before the housing collapse and it worked out rather well, the second purchase i am still in the red on the premiums. in the long term view i don't mind to much because i do like the coins and i have no need to sell,
after discovering the pp and being better informed about the reality's of gold i wish i had gone with bullion on the second buy, but it's being counted as deep gold/VP gold i do still stand a chance to make those better returns eventually, i just have no idea when that will be....  in the meantime they are pretty....

Numismatics are definitely VP material if you think of them as an investment. I prefer to think of them as a hobby that might be worth something down the road.

I have been collecting coins for about 20 years now, so hopefully some of this advice comes in handy.

If I were to buy numismatic coins as an investment, I would do the following things;

1. Buy only coins that are of premium quality for their assigned grade and only buy coins with above average eye appeal.
2. Collect series with a long history of solid price appreciation (Saints would qualify, but I would be extremely careful with moderns.)
3. I would only purchase slabbed coins and if you are spending north of 500 dollars, I would prefer Pcgs plastic.
4. Work with a good dealer that you can trust. I know this is odd sounding on a DIY investing forum, but the general consensus is that a second set of eyes will save you lots of money in the long run.

All the best,

Ryan
