The Gleason Report

Post by foglifter »

Tom Gleason has been publishing his free monthly report for many years. The topics covered both investing and politics and proved to be quite an interesting and thought-provoking read, even though some might call him a conspiracist. Nonetheless, his analysis of political and economic events has always been worth reading. You can still read the past reports from February 2012 to June 2013 and he promised to keep updating the models. Tom worked as a bullion dealer, real estate appraiser, financial analyst and fraud investigator - what a career! He likes the idea of Permanent Portfolio and while he hasn't specifically talked about pure HBPP he did recommend PRPFX on a number of occasions in his newsletters. He believes that every investor should own gold.

Today Tom has notified the subscribers that he decided to end the newsletter. With his permission I'm posting his announcement:

The Gleason Report

10 June 2013

Dear Subscribers,

I've decided to terminate my monthly newsletter effective immediately. I will still post the status of my market timing models on the web site each month with limited commentary and only about the markets.

I've decided that the political environment will likely take an unwelcome turn and it's time to run silent. I was advised that it's best not to be a cockroach on the train track.

It's been an interesting decade. Thank you for your friendship and loyalty. I've had very few people unsubscribe over the years despite some of my more extreme rants. My subscriber list grew every month and it's probably over 60% financial advisers and Wall Street folks. I will not sell or share the list. Financially, I'm proud to say my models have done well - not perfect - but better than most.

My book has the details on the market timing models. A core gold position of 25% is prudent.

Good luck to all.

I'll miss his monthly reports. I find it particularly chilling that he is concerned that a continuation of his newsletter does not jive with the present political environment:

"I've decided that the political environment will likely take an unwelcome turn and it's time to run silent. I was advised that it's best not to be a cockroach on the train track."

Whether it is the IRS scandal, the NSA fishing expedition, or Obama's attack on the press, this bodes poorly for our future.

For a person who believes in many different government conspiracies unfolding simultaneously, the statement above is another way of saying: "I have decided to retire."

Such a person who decided to visit Hawaii on vacation might say: "I have decided to temporarily flee to a remote location in the Pacific to escape the escalating sense of unease I feel on the mainland."
Q: “Do you have funny shaped balloons?”
A: “Not unless round is funny.”

I have been reading The Gleason Report for many years. I used to follow his one of his safety portfolios. He was also the first person who mentioned Permanent Portfolio (PRPFX) and when I started researching PRPFX I found Harry Browne and changed my portfolio from Toms Safety portfolio to 4x4 PP.  I liked the simplicity of 4x4 PP compared to the safety portfolio, I also like Toms book How to invest if you can not afford to lose. I also participated in a sailing race with one of the authors of the Bogleheads Guide to Investing who was a very nice person who I also like a lot but the age in bonds just did not suit me. I have been retired since I was in my early 50s. Once I found PP I never looked back.
