The Orwellian Paradigm

Post by notsheigetz »

I don't know if they still have a course called "Government" in high school but back in the stone(d) age (1967) it was a required course for seniors to prepare us to be good citizens. I recall that a significant portion of it was devoted to current events, aka, the War in Vietnam and to help us understand it better we were provided with materials printed by none other than the U.S. Department of Defense.

If I was teaching this course in 2013 I would start with this excellent piece by somebody named Faisal Moghul (sure sounds like a pseudonym to me).....

As hippyish as it may sound, courses in rhetoric/logic and philosophy would be a huge benefit in high school.  I've found that a lot of people in real life, hence happening in real time, without the ability to sit and think and google things, just don't think correctly.

By the way, the description of your class made me think immediately of Starship Troopers (the book, not the movie), excellent book, in case someone had preconceived notions based on seeing the movie.
You there, Ephialtes. May you live forever.
