Path Dependency Poll - What's your current asset allocation?

Post by dragoncar »

I'm at 25 / 26 / 23 / 26 mostly due to a BTLA (buy lagging asset) approach.  I'm curious how different the AA can be based on when people started and rebalanced.  Let us know your last rebalance, if you BTLA, or if you DCA at 25x4.

Edit: duh, you have no idea what those numbers mean.  I listed Gold / Stock / Bonds / Cash

My Gold/Stock/Bond/Cash allocation is currently at 24/27/24/25. I buy the lagging asset.

I started my PP near the end of 2010 and haven't hit a 15/35 rebalancing band yet. But maybe that's partly because my new contributions are not yet negligible relative to my portfolio size (i.e., I'm still in the "accumulation phase," nowhere near retirement).

I imagine it's harder to keep a PP hovering near 25/25/25/25--regardless of where the new contributions go--if the new contributions are only a tiny fraction of the portfolio size (say, << 1%).

There is indeed some path dependency in PP allocations and returns. At any point in time, one person might be at 15/35/25/25, another at 35/25/25/15, another at 15/15/35/35, etc. Those are extreme examples, but they can be used to sort of bound the range of possible PP returns over a given time period. There is not a single PP with a single return, but rather a range of PPs scattered around within the 15/35 bands.

G/S/B/C  = 24/28/23/25

Most new money goes into Stocks because that's the only PP-friendly thing available in 401k's. I don't mind that right now.

* Gold 24 / Stock 32 / Bonds 24 / Cash 20          Ginger on Gilligan's Island was 36/26/36 (I'm sorry for the lame joke; it just popped into my head).
* I  probably started by buying PRPFX over 3 years ago and dIY HBPP components over 2 years ago.
* The "lagging" assets were everything but stocks when I started.
* I have not had a real rebalance from the 35/15 bands, but I did do some minor tinkering, like selling some EDV when it was high and buying bonds.
* As mentioned in another thread, I'm going to spend my cash windfall on home renovation, otherwise the cash portion would be higher. When I put new money into the pp, I plan to just split it four ways, ie no more BTLA.

As of Feb 1, stocks 27/bonds 25/gold 24/cash 24.

Like dualstow - I bought into PRPFX 3 years ago, then consolidated a bunch of old retirement accounts and switched into the 4x25 PP about a year ago.  No rebalances yet.  Until recently I was dividing savings between buying lagging assets and prepaying the mortgage, but now I'm DCAing stocks, bonds, and cash in a retirement account.  I'll probably use a lagging asset approach to buy gold (in taxable).

Here's another asset question for everyone:  what's the percentage of gold held as a) bullion, b) certificates e.g. Perth Mint, and c) ETFs?  I'm 25/0/75.
