Here is the annual Callan Periodic Table of Investing Returns. It shows graphically the unpredictable nature of various asset classes in the market. It doesn't track gold or long-term bonds of the Permanent Portfolio, but the general idea or the random nature of things still comes through:

It would be great if they added 30-Yr and 2-Yr treasuries as well as Gold and maybe the GSCI to round it out with a few more major asset classes.
