I started to reply to another poster that CPI-U is around 30% based on housing costs, because housing is the biggest expense of most consumers. I realized I should post accurate information, or nothing at all, rather than spread rumors or guesses. I tried to google the info, and could only find a sample of what's in the basket of goods. I couldn't find the weightings.
I did find something called the Price Kaleidoscope for Germany's inflation index and it lists rental prices as 20% of the total.
Any idea where to find this info for the US? And potentially how it's changed over time? i.e. I'm sure the weightings differ from year to year.
