The significance of my avatar

Post by Storm »

I feel like Scrat from the Ice Age movies has significance for the Permanent Portfolio.

1.  He is always protecting his nut.  Squirrels are one of the few animals in nature that save and store food to survive throughout the cold winter.  They instinctively know the importance of saving for the future.

2.  Fear of the market.  Scrat is adorable, yet he is always fearful.  He's been dropped off too many cliffs, smashed under too many rocks, and stepped on by too many elephants to put all his nuts in one place.

3.  Still a saver.  Despite all of this, Scrat still saves his nuts and stores them for the future.

Does anyone else have a significant avatar that has to do with the PP?

Nice.  Never really put 2 & 2 together.

Very cool.

Although it makes me feel like a bit of a lazy schlub for not even having an avatar, let alone one with a whole Permanent Portfolio backstory.

Mine is Dr. Loboto from the videogame Psychonauts. He's a hilarious character:

I've always wondered what that is.

Mine, of course, is Underdog. A favorite from my youth, it captures the permanent portfolio in two ways: first, the portfolio forces you to buy the underdog, when others are selling, and second, the assets that are out of favor have repeatedly saved our bacon at a later time, underestimated by the market and the market gurus, much as Professor Simon Barsinister would underestimate Underdog.

There's no need to fear! Underdog is here!
when criminals in this world appear
and break the laws that they should fear
and frighten all who see or hear
the cry goes up both far and near
for Underdog! Underdog! Underdog! Underdog!

speed of lightning, roar of thunder
fighting all who rob or plunder
Underdog. Underdog!

when in this world the headlines read
of those whose hearts are filled with greed
who rob and steal from those who need
to right this wrong with blinding speed
goes Underdog! Underdog! Underdog! Underdog!

speed of lightning, roar of thunder
fighting all who rob or plunder
Underdog. Underdog!

It's one of the funniest video games I've ever played. Highly recommended!

Yeah, "Psychonauts" is always on those lists of "really awesome video games that didn't make anywhere near as much money as they should have".  Heard that's a good one.  Hey, looks like it's only $10 on Steam too.
