rebalance question taxable vs non taxable

Post by steve »

If you need to rebalance by selling some long term bonds and also selling some gold to buy stock would you sell some Long term bonds that are in an IRA before selling some that are in a taxable account with a short term gain or would you just rebalance and keep as much as possible of long term bonds in IRA?  short term gain is taxed as regular income and so are dividends from long term bonds in a taxable account. This is something I started thinking about. Hopefully the short term gains will become long term before having to rebalance.

Without doing any math, I think I would probably take the short term gain hit.

I say this because I'd prefer to keep the LTT interest stream as tax free as possible.
