Blaming the Smurfs for the crash? Really?

The financial media is blaming the August 4 crash on the Smurfs, simply because a few of them were there to open trading (ring the bell) at the NYSE.
Someone started this rumor on Twitter, then CNBC and CNN picked up on it. They even reported this rumor on ABC's "Nightline."
I have a tendency to assume these reports are made in jest, but with the levels of journalist (in)competency these days, fostering everything from hare-brained conspiracy theories to hacking into people's mobile phones, maybe they really believe this.
In case any of you are wondering, I was not there, and I had nothing to do with it.
