(there are free-weight and body weight versions of big 5 as well)
That looks intense. I'm going to read up on this as much as possible, but since you've already done your research, is this particularly effective for hypertrophy?
i think the answer is ... yes ... but its very complex and it varies a bunch based on genetics..

this may be of interest or get you headed in the right search direction http://www.bodybyscience.net/home.html/?p=1280 it looks to me like careful (exhaustive?) charting of workouts and results and then carefully changing parameters and monitoring results is needed to maximize hypertrophy for your genetics..  (this may be true of all lifting programs not just HIT strength training ones)

My response has been good. Ive been lifting for about 20 years now (since high school) I started HIT style training about 6 months ago. Im 5-10 and started at 172 pounds with about 9 percent bodyfat. Yesterday i weighed in at 190 with about 9 percent bodyfat. So a little under 20 pounds of muscle. My intensity over the last six months though has been very high. And i have been more diligent about diet and tracking workouts. Im shooting for 200 pounds but im doubtful whether i have the hormones left in my mid to late 30s to get me there. Ill find out i guess

My friend who started from a detrained condition gained 12 pounds in yhe first two months but has stopped growing now. He has had strength gains but no weight gain over last 4 months.    So everyone is a bit different.

Two thumbs up on Drew Baye.  Been following him for over a year.  He split from "Body By Science" and evolved; McGraff has not.

But to get the Big Five cannonology down, I recommend Mark Rippetoe's Starting Strength: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0982522738/

Ironically, I now got a lower back pain (not sharp) from what was probably bad form on the deadlift three weeks ago.  I think I lifted with a missing small weight on the other end and the week after that small weight on the other end fell off during mid-movement.  Last week, I decided to lower the weight and just do more reps to be at least the equivalent volume.  But now I'm thinking I'll just take a break and wait for it to heal up.  Also I'm going to add in more reps after failure to get more volume done since I'm at my absolute limit without eating more calories or jacking up T.  Form is definitely far more important than how much you can lift.  It is not as mentally satisfying or ego gratifying, though!

5.9 started at 167 low-carb/no-carb dropped down to 154 added in HIT body weight (strength training not body building using drew bey's project kratos) and am up to 159 unfortunately i have been horrible at tracking and record keeping, i have no measurements except the occasional random weigh in, and i get so focused on form, going to failure, and physical exertion (pounding heart heavy breathing) that i loose count of reps even on exercises that i am in the 5 or less range on..
i suspect (or hope) that body fat has continued to drop (slowly) and muscle mass has gone up, i am still working on that tough to kill last 15 to 20 lb of tenacious visceral fat and whats left of the love handles...

even w/o tracking there has been enough muscle weight gain that i can spot it in the mirror so ...so far so good ...
