Bloomberg's commencement speech at Harvard

Post by Reub »

"Former Mayor Michael Bloomberg slams intolerance by liberals on college campuses during fiery Harvard graduation address

In a fiery address to Harvard graduates, former Mayor Michael Bloomberg lashed out Thursday against intolerance by liberals on college campuses — citing how Brown University treated his police commissioner last fall.

Delivering the main speech at Harvard’s 363rd commencement in Cambridge, Mass., Bloomberg complained that campuses have become citidels of “modern . . . McCarthyism”? where conservative views are too often shunned and shouted down.

“In the 1950s, the right wing was attempting to repress left-wing ideas. Today, on many campuses, it is liberals trying to repress conservative ideas, even as conservative faculty members are at risk of becoming an endangered species,”? he said.

“And that is probably nowhere more true than it is here in the Ivy League.”?

I am sometimes amazed at how intolerant the left can be! It's almost like they can't see what they have become.

It seems to me that many do not want to objectively look into the mirror for fear of what they might see.  When one is wedded to their own version of "truth", much distortion is possible, even likely, especially if they are elitist or "know it all" in their interactions with others.

While I agree with Bloomberg somewhat, I must point out his intolerance of people who want to guzzle 48 oz of sugary soda in one sitting.

Buying a supersized Big Gulp, or whatever it is, might be a stupid and suicidal thing to do, but shouldn't people make that decision for themselves, rather than Daddy Bloomberg?

How can anyone expect tolerance from people who use excuses of climate change, Obamacare, etc to foist what they want on everyone?

Just remember, the door swings both ways in an Authoritarianism society.  Don't be so cocky that your side will never ever do what the other side does.

MG,

Suppression of dissent:  papers that don't agree with man made climate change were suppressed, recently a scientist who was skeptical of man made climate change was harassed, increasingly college students feel they have the right to prevent dissenting opinions from being expressed (and they have gotten their way).

And of course you know who:

"'I don't want the folks who created the mess to do a lot of talking. I want them to just get out of the way so we can clean up the mess!'"

But as I've said before, he is only a symptom.  Forget DC, forget politicians, forget people in the media, the fact that people i.e. so called scientists, and college students feel that is acceptable and appropriate to suppress dissent speaks volumes.

I'm from the generation of students that shut down campuses and burned down ROTC buildings so these anti-establishment protests against commencement speakers seem fairly mild in comparison.

I don't know what all the protests were about and I doubt I would agree with all of them but in the case of Ms. Rice, has the time truly come for the neoconservatives who got us into the Iraq war to be honored with commencement speeches at prestigious universities? That somebody is finally expressing how many Americans really feel about it is a healthy sign to me.

I don't mind the protests against the head of the IMF either but I suspect my reasons are entirely different than the protesters.

As my own personal protest, I will not be watching this week's showing of Cosmos, which from their coming attractions will be devoted to the global warming religious cult. Instead, I will be watching the season's premiere of Mountain Men!
