My Canadian PP

Post by mattymcmatt »

I'm finally setting up the PP for real this time.  It's been on my mind for over a year and because of my situation, I hesitated as to what is the best way to set it up.  (I'm Canadian married to a Japanese and currently living in Japan.  My income generally tends to be USD and we don't know where we will live/retire in the future).

I've decided to just setup an all-Canadian PP for now.

I'll go with the following:

Stocks - VCN
Bonds - Buy long term 30 year Canada bonds through my broker (min. purchase ~$5500)
Gold - MNT (Gold held by the Canadian Mint with a 0.35% MER)
Cash - I'll just keep the cash in my Tax Free Savings Account with my bank.  When my portfolio grows more, I'll split the cash between my bank account and short term bonds.

When I can get tax-free accounts setup with my broker, at that time I'll probably split the stocks, bonds and maybe cash, 50/50 between Canada and the US.  In Canada, dividends from US companies are taxed at a lower rate when held inside an RRSP.

Just thought I'd put this out there.  I know there's a lot already on the forum about Canadian PP.
