Does anyone watch this show?
My sister recommended it to me a few years back, and I tried to watch a few times but got bored.
But I gave it one last shot recently, and by the 6-7th episode I couldn't stop watching it. It's really a fantastic show. I'm surprised it's so popular, though. It's sort of a quiet drama.

I find it interesting, but not addictive like Breaking Bad. There's just not enough nail-biting drama going on. It's a bunch of people you mostly don't like (but still love to watch) going through the early-60's with some interesting story threads, but nothing like The Shield, BB, Dexter, etc, where you are wondering when the hell the whole thing is going to come crashing down (well, other than Don getting caught with all his affairs).

Definitely not the edge-of-your-seat drama that a show like Breaking Bad was, but I love the dialogue, especially the business talk between all of the partners, and I think Don Draper has some great insights at times ("people show us exactly who they are, but we ignore it, because we want them to be who we want them to be," etc). I also enjoy the elbow nudges toward the 1960's, ("i hope Vietnam doesn't turn into another Korea"). Boardwalk Empire does that a lot too, to the 1920's.
It took a while to grow on me, though. I was just curious what others thought.

I liked Mad Men for its realistic depiction of the early 1960s era. I hate to admit I can remember much of it. I was born in the very early 1950s and sweated getting drafted in the late 1960s. Speaking of riveting TV, for anyone who likes both history and organized crime shows I'd highly recommend The Borgias (The Original Crime Family). The three season series is now available on DVD, which is how I watched it. It is kind of like the Godfather movies and Soprano TV series, but is set in Renaissance Rome in the 1490s and is the basically true story of Pope Alexander VI (played by Jeremy Irons) who is generally considered the most corrupt pope in the history of the Papacy. Wow! It's too bad they couldn't continue it or do a "wrap up" movie to finish it, but apparently it was very expensive to produce.
I'd be interested if anyone else on the forum watched the series and had a similar reaction.
