Morning in America?

I'm a born pessimist but I have to admit that I saw something with my own eyes over the weekend that lends a little credence to this gentleman's optimistic view of things. That would be "Help Wanted" signs. Back before the great recession I remember seeing them in the windows of practically every business I passed by but they seemed to vanish almost completely for a long time. While walking through the mall over the weekend I couldn't help but notice quite a few of them. Even a mobile home park I passed by on the way to work had a sign outside advertising for help.

Unemployment has been headed pretty much straight down since it peaked in 2009.ns3 wrote: http://dailyreckoning.com/its-morning-again-in-america/

It's now approaching pre-recession levels, though the naysayers would say that the number of people who have dropped out of the workforce skews the figures a lot.

The naysayers would be right.
We have record numbers of unemployed. The official unemployment doesn't actually measure unemployment just like the CPI doesn't measure inflation. They aren't even attempts to and yet people think they do.
I’m guessing these help wanted positions are not very high paying or with good benefits or the record numbers of unemployed would be scooping them up.
What’s happened is the inflation of the past few years has made the real minimum wage lower even if the nominal minimum wage is the same. This is one of the only benefits of inflation, the lowering of minimum wage in real terms. It helps make these part-time and low-skill jobs affordable/profitable for businesses to create.
Unfortunately since we have safety hammocks, I mean nets, why would someone accept these crappy jobs rather than enjoy welfare, disability, unemployment or just plain leisure and loafing?
The economy is not recovering. Not even close. Let Obama and Congress up the min wage and you’ll see these signs disappear as fast as we are seeing the ranks of the employed disappear.

I'm guessing an innate sense of self-worth that comes from being a productive member of society rather than a free-loader. Maybe it's only the circles I travel in but my impression is that most people still have that.Kshartle wrote: Unfortunately since we have safety hammocks, I mean nets, why would someone accept these crappy jobs rather than enjoy welfare, disability, unemployment or just plain leisure and loafing?

Our impression of people is heavily influenced by the company we keep. I assure you, there are tens of millions of Americans, maybe 100 million, maybe 200 million, who get absolutely zero sense of self-worth from their job or the concept of having one. They would all gladly quit if they could maintain their standard of living.
That's why these jobs will go unfilled. They don't raise the worker's standard of living, they decrease it because they have to sacrifice leisure for meager pay.

Since the poor are laying in safety hammocks, I guess poverty HAS in fact been eliminated, or significantly reduced. Thank God we fixed that problemKshartle wrote: The naysayers would be right.

The problem is it can't be sustained. What will the poor do when their heros can no longer borrow at affordable rates? Then the cruelty of the dependancy created will be impossible to ignore.

Just like Britain saw economic meltdown after WWII when they had massive debt/GDP, crumbled infrastructure, AND decided to build a universal healthcare system.Kshartle wrote:moda0306 wrote:Since the poor are laying in safety hammocks, I guess poverty HAS in fact been eliminated, or significantly reduced. All it took was a little theft from future taxpayers by having the gumbit borrow trillions.

The town I live in gets tons of temporary residents from the UK for the winter. Are you telling me we're going to end up with teeth like the British?moda0306 wrote:

My girlfriend is a dental hygenist. Based on the struggles of her dentists and their businesses....I think that's right.
Re: Morning in America?
Obama just signed an executive order raising min wage for all government contract workers to $10.10
The idea is they will have more money in their pockets so they can spend more. This is supposed to benefit the economy and businesses.
What do you guys think the result will be?

More money in the pockets of union members since so many union contracts are based on minimum wage. Build that voter base! No matter how sleazy the method to do it.Kshartle wrote: Obama just signed an executive order raising min wage for all government contract workers to $10.10

Re: Morning in America?
It is not the people getting minimum wage (they are only a very small percentage of union contractors); it is the wage scales for the higher earners that have their wages tied to the minimum wage. Thus, a very sneaky way to pay the union members more without having to advertise it. Obama is wanting to sound magnanimous in taking care of the "poor" while really mostly rewarding the higher wage earners in the unions.Kshartle wrote:What good is a union to someone getting min wage?Mountaineer wrote:More money in the pockets of union members since so many union contracts are based on minimum wage. Got it. This will no doubt increase union dues and thus democrap campaign contributions.Mountaineer wrote:It is not the people getting minimum wage (they are only a very small percentage of union contractors); it is the wage scales for the higher earners that have their wages tied to the minimum wage. It's a transfer of wealth from business owners to the dems.

Don't cofuse the union members with the union bosses and the politicians they give money to.
Expect this executive order to kill a lot of jobs in 'merica long-term and boost employment in Asia.
The only benefit I can think of to the economy of inflation is it essentialy eliminates the destructivness of the min wage. We can't have that now can we?
