Caution to all concealed carriers....

Post by ns3 »

I'm hoping there is more to this story than meets the eye because if not it is truly alarming.

Basically, it's about a man with a concealed carry permit travelling without his gun being stopped by the Maryland police for the sole reason of having the permit. My biggest question is how did they even get this information? Was his license plate recorded at a tool booth and looked up in a database thus alerting the police? Astounding if that's what really happened.

Part of me actually thinks stuff like this is good. Black people have always had to contend with harassment like this, but white (and white-looking) people are not so accustomed to it, and seeing as they're the ones with the political power (being in the electoral majority, after all), I have high hopes for the quaintly outraged white people doing something about what the black people have known about for hundreds of years.

Scary stuff. My folks live in Maryland. I'll remember that when I apply for my CC permit. ( I don't own a vehicle, but I'll expect them to be waiting for me at my train stop. ;-) Im only half-joking, sadly.

We will continue to suffer illegal and unconstitutional treatment at the hands of LEOs because nobody is doing anything to bring meaningful consequences to their behavior. LEOs should be held to the highest standard. Violate a citizens rights? Enjoy some jail time.

California, as of January 1st, now requires registration of long gun purchases.

I am going to add the term "hostile states" to my vocabulary.

Forgot to +1 PS's post above.

Also, it seems like the message they're sending is that if you go through the proper legal channels of gun ownership, you will be harrassed.

I still want to know just how in the heck the Maryland State troopers were alerted to the fact that someone with a concealed carry permit in another state had crossed the border. I'm suspecting surveillance cameras.

We'll if state license registries are connected somehow, they might be able to pull it from just running your plates.

That's what I suspect. Is it really that much of a surprise that such a database would be shared between state police forces? I wouldn't be shocked if the Feds had scooped up Florida's database and made it available to the Maryland state police.

Rule of thumb: any government database will be shared beyond the original intentions of its creators. This is one of the reasons that the mass collection of information by the government is dangerous.

One thing I contemplate in this debate about federalism, and what different levels of gov't "should" or "should not" do, is to what degree should we expect one level of government to NOT divulge our information to another... especially from one state to another.  Or even from one department of one government to another.

My state would never divulge my license information to a private entity... what makes another state automatically such a valid entity to send my information to?  As a resident of MN, what on God's green earth gives my government the authority to share my info with the evil government of Wisconsin? :)
