I tried Ubuntu with my granddaughter and I found myself putting in just as much time helping her to set up things she had managed to do perfectly well with Windows, like iTunes. I don't think there was even a Linux version so I tried some Linux equivalent and also WINE but finally gave up and re-installed Windows.gizmo_rat wrote: I used to get quite annoyed with the amount of effort I was putting in to keep their machines functional, but having seen a drive-by virus injection from a compromised education site that went straight through the virus protection I realise that you can't educate to avoid that.

iTunes is one of the big things that's not available for Linux. If you have an iOS device, good luck getting it to work with Linux, it's a crapshoot. Of course, you can blame Apple for that, not Linux.notsheigetz wrote: I tried Ubuntu with my granddaughter and I found myself putting in just as much time helping her to set up things she had managed to do perfectly well with Windows, like iTunes. Human behavior is economic behavior. The particulars may vary, but competition for limited resources remains a constant.

Now that I think of it, the thing that really made me go back was when she told me the webcam I had bought her for windows didn't work on Linux. With windows I just handed it to her still in the box and never heard another word. With Linux, I figured I could probably get it working if I tried hard enough but after dealing with stuff like this all day at work I said life is too short.Pointedstick wrote:iTunes is one of the big things that's not available for Linux.
