Best recent Netflix instant download
I have a relaxing evening at home, and I am looking for a suggestion for a documentary or film. In an ideal world, I would like to see the thread focused on those available for instant download. As a means of getting the ball rolling, I will make a recommendation:
Note by Note: The Making of Steinway L1037
A great documentary on the entire process of building a concert grand, and the people that do it.

For documentaries, I like:
Food, Inc.
Mind Over Money
Bigger, Faster, Stronger
Also, a little outdated by now, but still relevant:
I.O.U.S.A.

"The Cove" is about the Japanese dolphin trade.
Amazing and gripping documentary.
***
"Manufactured Landscapes" is about man-made environments that are similar in scale and ecology to certain natural environments. I watched it a year ago and it streamed then, but it looks like it is only available on disc now.
***
"After Innocence" is about prisoners who are released after serving time for crimes they didn't commit and what life is like afterward. It streams.
***
"Commune" is about members of a hippie commune that formed in 1968 and how life unfolded for them in the decades that followed. It streams.
***
"Solitary Confinement" is about the currently popular practice of destroying the minds of prisoners by placing them in solitary confinement for long periods (like years). It streams.
***
"I Think We're Alone Now" is about two mentally ill fans of 1980s pop artist Tiffany and their quest to become the perfect Tiffany fans and find whatever it is they are looking for in life. (It's not as dumb as it sounds.). It streams.
***
"180 Degrees South" is a laid back movie about some mountain climbers heading to Patagonia looking for adventure and meaning. Very soothing story with beautifully filmed scenes. It streams.

The Cove was heartbreaking, but important to see. Thanks to all for the suggestions; this will be a nice source to check back on for additional ideas.
Re: Best recent Netflix instant download
Fat Head - A response to the movie "Supersize Me." The main character eats nothing but fast food for a month and loses weight while improving his blood numbers.
Re: Best recent Netflix instant download
Confessions of a Porn Addict--I know the faux documentary genre is getting a little played out, but this movie is very funny.
Tyson--Thought it would be boring, but could not turn it off.
Puzzlehead--One of the best sci fi flicks you'll see.
This Film is Not Yet Rated--Documentary about the MPAA film ratings.
A State of Mind--Eerie documentary about the North Korean mass games
The next two are probably not the type of recs you're looking for, but I will make them for others who may be interested:
Go God Go (two part episode from season 10 of South Park...not technically a film, and a little vulgar, but brilliant)
Sarah Silverman: Jesus is Magic (Stand-up Comedy)
Also--Ditto to the Bigger Faster Stronger Rec.
Good post, by the way. I thought I had seen all of the good documentaries on Netflix, but I see a number of recs that I haven't heard of...esp Fat Head.
I have always thought the movie Supersize Me was nonsense. I think the only reason that guy gained weight and got wacky liver enzymes, etc was b/c he simply increased his calorie intake by an insane amount. I don't think it had anything to do with the food he was eating, outside of the fact the the french fries at McDonald's are very caloric.

King of Kong was also excellent and very funny. Even non nerds will like it.
Supersize me was annoying and patronizing. In fat head he simply shows that skipping the soda and fries while limiting white flour at these places you will lose weight. His doctor's reaction at the end of 30 days of eating fast food was priceless.

"Frontline: Storm Over Everest" is an account of the 1996 tragedy on Mount Everest, including interviews with survivors.
***
"Restrepo" is a documentary about the U.S. military engagement in Afghanistan. Really good.
***
"National Geographic: Inside North Korea" is a fascinating undercover look into one of the strangest societies in the world today. The hero worship of Kim Jong Il and his father is really bizarre.
***
"Cocaine Cowboys" is about the early years of Miami's drug trade. One of the remarkable things is how light drug sentences used to be. Great characters (including really bad villains).
***
"Helvetica" is about the origins of the helvetica font. Not nearly as boring as it sounds.
***
"Objectified" is a look at how the shape and form of the products we use influence our lives. Really thoughtful and penetrating documentary.
***
"Nova: Wright Brothers Flying Machine" shows how the Wright Brothers' early airplanes were far more sophisticated than most people imagine. One part of the show features a pilot who tries to recreate an early Wright Brothers plane (it proved to be a lot harder than it looks).
***
"Bulletproof Salesman" is about a German armored car salesman in Iraq and how the demand for his products evolved over the course of the war.
***
"The Architecture of Doom" looks at the role that art and architecture played in the rise of the Nazi movement in Germany. The degree to which Nazi Germany was a staged production (and Hitler and his minions frustrated artists) is eye opening.
***
"Urban Explorers: Into the Darkness" is about a group of people who explore underground chambers, abandoned buildings, lost subway stations, and many other eerie and dangerous places that are forgotten parts of the urban landscape. I'm surprised more of these people don't die doing this very dangerous activity.

Re: Best recent Netflix instant download
Such great recommendations in here! Thanks for all these tips.
There's nothing mystical about McDonald's food. It's calories in vs. calories out, and it's 3500 KCal to the pound. If you eat more calories than you burn, you're going to gain fat. The first law of thermodynamics is not suspended inside the walls of a McDonald's restaurant. Whether you emerge from the experiment a bloated fat-arse or ripped to the bone is down to the choices you make when you order and whether you engage in exercise.
I need to check out "Fat Head", sounds entertaining. I read a journal by a guy named Chazz Weaver who also did 30 days with strictly McDonald's, starting fit and winding up even fitter.
King of Kong is great storytelling. It turns out not to be a very accurate recounting of events as they actually took place (Steve Wiebe held the record for months) but it's a really fun movie to watch. "Kill screen coming up!" They turn Steve Wiebe and Billy Mitchell into extremely entertaining characters.craigr wrote: King of Kong was also excellent and very funny. Even non nerds will like it.
Supersize Me was one of the dumbest things I've seen in my life. A puny, active vegan starts starts gorging himself to the point of barfing and intentionally ceases all exercise. I may not be able to predict the future in the financial markets, but I think I've got a prediction on how this one turns out!craigr wrote:Supersize me was annoying and patronizing. Re: Best recent Netflix instant download
Exercise you say? I feel another thread coming on.
Re: Best recent Netflix instant download
I think a new thread on the benefits of weight training vs cardio would be excellent (more as far as what mix is appropriate, not that one should completely overshadow the other). As much as I have respect for anyone who can get themselves enough in shape to run 26 miles, I think they passed the poing of diminishing cardio returns long ago, just as their joints started to get a beating of a lifetime.
I tend to think things like biking and even elliptical or swimming are a much better form of cardio than the repeated jarring effect of running. It's like trying to beat religion into someone.
My 2 cents.

We need to get Billy Mitchell on this forum. That guy's a winner.
