China's abandoned cities

Post by Pointedstick »

China's building boom has created a ton of abandoned cities and massive ruins — most of which are brand new, and have never had people living in them. Here are the deserted Chinese cities, mostly built in the last 10 years, which could be sets for your next dystopian movie.

Human behavior is economic behavior. The particulars may vary, but competition for limited resources remains a constant.

60 minutes did a segment on these cities not too long ago. I especially remember a poignant scene of poor people sifting through the rubble of the old homes that were torn down to erect the new buildings they could no longer afford to live in. Left me thinking that all those predictions of China soon overtaking the U.S. as the world's economic power might be exaggerated.

They're like more beautiful versions of what I've seen of Detroit. (of course, Detroit still has millions of people living there)

Except for the earthquake/memorial city. That's weird.
You there, Ephialtes. May you live forever.

Those predicting China's future economic dominance must not have done business in China.  The corruption runs deep.
