Does anyone here follow the musings of Porter Stansberry?  I have been listening to his weekly podcast (called 'Stansberry Radio'), and it's hilarious and quite entertaining.  He is primarily a newsletter writer, so you have to look past all the "pitches", but otherwise, a lot of the stuff on the shows is sensible.  I think folks around here would agree with lots of the info on recent shows, such as:

- diversify your portfolio with gold, preferably directly held (no paper gold)
- direct ownership of treasury bills for your cash (keep the duration short due to immanent inflation due to massive overspending by the gov't)
- stocks getting expensive across the board, hold off on new purchases, raise cash
- stay away from most municipal bonds, they are going to explode
- lots of railing against the gov't
- Japan is doomed (long gold / short Yen is a good trade in the coming years)

Stansberry got slapped with a big fine for committing fraud about 10 years ago, but he always claims that the gov't targeted him unfairly.  I don't know the truth, I just know that the shows are a lot of fun.  Plus there is also lots of "rich man tales", such as his recent trip fishing on his yacht in Florida (but where are the customers' yachts?).  The sidekick co-host Aaron Brabham also does a good job; he used to peddle mortgages back in the boom, and they keep him around for comic relief (I think he loaded up on gold coins at $1900).  Plenty of entertainment value in these shows.

I spent at least 48 hours talking my dad out of investing in natural gas after he received paper mail ads from Stansberry.
That's time that could've been better spent.
And of course, natural gas crashed.

As long as you find him entertaining, then I would just enjoy the entertainment.

Be careful about taking investment advice from a person like that, though.  I read all of the SEC documents about his trouble a few years back and it seemed like a very legitimate case brought against a pretty shady guy.

But shady guys can be very entertaining.  Look at G. Gordon Liddy.  You will never find a more shady thug than him, but he was a great entertainer later in life.

If Dick Cheney doesn't like it, he should start a radio show and prove me wrong.  For now, G. Gordon Liddy gets my vote for most entertaining U.S. government thug, though when Cheney shot his buddy in the face a few years back it did get my attention.  I kept waiting for Bush to announce that Cheney's friend was actually part of Al Qaeda.  I always hated that Bush missed out on such a strong (and rare) comic opportunity.
