I've always thought of it as computers day trading using algorithms..

Aye carumba.  This is why it's called "trading" and not "investing".

Maybe it's too much of a generalization but I've always thought that HFTs improve market efficiency by making small profits on (supposedly) mispriced securities..  and greater market efficiency is usually a win for passive investments (like the PP.)

Thats the lie the HFT apologists sell you.  In reality, its a tax on everyone.  And the regulators are so far behind the curve, it is comical.
