Holding Gold
I know this with vary from person to person, but just curious to hear how much, percentage-wise, everyone keeps in physical gold vs. ETF's vs. whatever.
Thanks,
Adam

31.5%
Re: Holding Gold
So far, 100% physical.
Re: Holding Gold
56% physical, but I wish I had a larger percentage of physical. If I ever have a chance to rebalance out of gold, I'll be selling my ETFs first to reduce exposure to expenses and ETF risk.bigamish wrote: So far, 100% physical.

Me too...gold drive me nuts. I mean, I love gold, but I get a little crazy figuring out the best way to own it. Makes me nervous to have it in my house, but also makes me nervous to have IOU's.Gumby wrote: If I ever have a chance to rebalance out of gold, I'll be selling my ETFs first to reduce exposure to expenses and ETF risk.
It's the one thing about the PP that keeps me from having that total sense of serenity that HB talked about.

Re: Holding Gold
Adam,
Can't you simply add the gold to your homeowners insurance policy?

Re: Holding Gold
Adding bullion as a rider to your homeowner's policy tends to be very, very expensive. You're better off going to a insurance broker who specializes in insuring coins. See the Do you insure your Gold? thread for more info.moda0306 wrote: Can't you simply add the gold to your homeowners insurance policy?

100% virtual, sad to say... I worry about it sometimes (GLD, IAU).

Peter Schiff is sometimes pretty entertaining.
Someone was talking about owning gold ETFs one time and he said that was a terrible idea. When asked why he said something like "if someone was breaking into your home, would you want to own a handgun ETF or a real handgun?"

Re: Holding Gold
100% physical. A large mayonaise jar will hold more 1 ounce gold coins than any one person needs, or probably can afford. I have a huge fire safe, but the coins are in the dirt outside.

Re: Holding Gold
100% paper, for now. I think when I'm done implementing the PP I will hold about 33% of my gold as physical.
If I were fortunate enough to become really wealthy, instead of using a percentage, I would probably cap it at a hard number like $100,000 worth of physical gold. Holding more than that in a safe in my house would make me nervous. I guess a bank deposit box is always an option.

If somebody was breaking into your home, would you want to own gold or a gold ETF? LOL.MediumTex wrote: Peter Schiff is sometimes pretty entertaining.

I think probably the ETF.
