100 Simple things you can do to prevent Alzheimers

Post by Benko »

Table of contents here:
http://jeancarper.com/inside-book/table-of-contents/

Her overall plan at the end of the book is a plan for good health.

Carper is a science writer who writes on nutrition/supplements.  I like her work because she is neither so "bleeding edge" that her comments tend to prove wrong over time, but current enough that she is way ahead of most conventional nutritional sources which are typically decades behind the times ( e.g. mayo clinic on vit D).

She used to have a column eating smart and has many other prior books.

Like many nutrition experts a few years ago she succumbed to capitalism and there is now a line of products. I have not researched them, and don't have any opinion on them.

I think if you can memorize the 100 simple things then you have a good start toward preventing Alzheimer's :)

Interesting list, but 100 items is daunting.

I'm always on guard against being "penny wise and pound foolish." Surely some of the items on that very long list must be far more highly associated with reduction in Alzheimer's than some of the other items are.

If we could identify the four or five biggest-impact items from that list (for Alzheimer's specifically), the list would be much shorter and thus far more likely to actually be memorized by average people.

The advice I've always received from my M.D. father is that one of the best ways of reducing the probability of getting Alzheimer's is simply to stay mentally and physically active one's entire life. In other words, exercise your mind and body every day if possible--even after retirement. That's much easier for me to remember and incorporate into my daily life than a laundry list of eat-this-not-that, drink-this-not-that, do-this-not-that... :)

The list is way of eating, etc that are health promoting.  If you are at all attune to being healthy, etc many you are probably doing already,  some will not work for you eg No way I'm adding 5+oz red wine to my diet regularly, and some will be easy to add.

I noticed that the majority of the items on the list are restatements of items that are already on the list.  Items 1 and 100 are similar. Items 33, 38, 58, 59, and 82 are restatements or related.  Items 2,42, 66, 70, 96, 97 are related to each other.  Items 6, 8, 11, 19, 55, 89, and 100 are related to each other.  The list can be reduced to 30 items or fewer.

I think that the pressures of publishing cried out for a list with 100 items in it, which corresponds with chapter headings.  While there are many things  one can do, it's  more likely that there are 27 known things that could work than a round number like 100.  You can see this in the alphabetical A-to-W nature of the list.  (Look at the items in bold.)

Yeah, I was going to say, "What was #1 again?"

I think it was Al Franken who said the one cool thing about Alzheimer's is that you can hide your own Easter eggs.

Yes, I know I downloaded the book and glanced through it before I posted this thread.  I almost put a disclaimer in my post above about that (having nothing to do with your thread).

Most of her advise is pretty good and her track record is as good as any authority I know, though I don't agree with all of it, and certainly not the asprin (because it offers no benefits not obtained elsewhere and contains unnecessary risks as I and MG pointed out in your thread).

You are an adult and want to take the asprin so take it (being aware of the risks mentioned in that thread, GI bleeding being only one.  I had posted another risk in your thread).

From her book:

"If you drink apple juice with cinnamon, look after your gums, read, dance and take an aspirin a day - you are well on your way to preventing Alzheimer's disease."

Reub,

Cinnamon is wonderful stuff FOR YOUR BLOOD SUGAR.  it is also SUPER warming from a chinese medicine point of view.  My chinese medical profile was that I was too warm, so I had not been taking any cinnamon for a long time (I''ve had small amounts with the very cold weather we've had recently). POint being that from one point of view cinnamon is wonderful, everyone should take it, from another, is it good for some, but bad for others. Things are not always simple.  Carper is generally pretty good, certainly better than listening to your MD, but I don't agree with everything she says.

Google alzheimers and curcumin.

You are repeating the same thing/similar things over and over and I can not add anything to what I've already said.
