Manti Te'o

Post by smurff »

I had no idea one could have a fake lover-- whom one has never even met, let alone kissed-- until this story broke out.  I saw the movie "Catfish," but after the Manti story I've been watching Catfish the series on MTV.

Sometimes I think Manti was in on the scam, then New info is revealed and I believe he's totally innocent.  Then more comes out and its like he had to have known.  I guess my paying attention to this scandal is as ridiculous as people who believe that a lover they've  "known" only via Facebook for 3 years will always be completely honest about how they present themselves.

What was the point of having a fake lover?

If he's complicit in the hoax: A fake lover is for a fake life. (I include trying to game the NFL pick list for monetary advantage as demonstrating another type of fake life.)

If he's innocent of hoaxing us: The issue regarding Manti is the notion that he regarded an entity he had only communicated with electronically, and never met in person, as his girlfriend.

In other words, some people seem to have lost (or never developed) the ability to distinguish real life from fantasy, and cannot tell if someone might be deceiving them.

In either case, the other weird thing is that there are sociopaths and other disturbed  people out in internet-land who are willing to take years out of their lives to perpetrate frauds like this.

When I ventured into the world of online dating of women in foreign countries I learned all about this. They are known as "scammers". You won't believe some of the stories - not so much for what the scammers do to prey on lonely people looking for love but how stupid some people can be to fall for it - and keep falling for it.

Having said that, I found my wife this way, we've been married for 8 years and she's the best thing that ever happened to me.
