Has there ever been a comedic prepper film?
I think 2013 is going to be the year of prepper comedies.
That's not to say I don't like guns, gold or canned corned beef hash. I'm all in favor of those.

The Tremors films, Joe Versus the Volcano and Blast From the Past are three that come to mind.

Not a film, but the Y2K episode of King of the Hill was pretty great.

Those all sound very familiar -- well King of the Hill I know very well -- but I thought Joe vs the Volcano was really about a guy getting thrown into a volcano! I'll have to revisit that one.
I haven't seen Tremors, altho I've seen references to it here.
I want to write a script with a character like John Goodman's in 'The Big Lebowski'.

One of my favorite Tremors scenes:
[Burt cuts off a piece of fuse for a bomb for Earl]
Earl: What kind of fuse is that?
Burt: Cannon fuse
Earl: What the hell do you use it for?
Burt: My cannon!
And this gem
Val: You see, we plan ahead, that way we don't do anything right now.

It was, but it also had some nice scenes of buying prepping gear, dealing with some personal SHTF, and overall I enjoyed the way he geared up to face an unknown challenge after what he perceived to be a very boring and uneventful life.dualstow wrote: I thought Joe vs the Volcano was really about a guy getting thrown into a volcano! Burt: "You guys do what you do best!"
Burt: "Find something simple and complicate it!"

Burt Gummer is so much better as a mythic figure than actually watching and being underwhelmed.l82start wrote: you would like burt gummer

maybe i understood the Burt Gummer caricature wrong.... but i saw it as a well done, playful, humorous and somewhat self depreciating (b movie) take on the survivalist gun nut... did i miss something?

No, I think the problem is he's just not as amusing in the sequels. It gets predictably old rather than continuing to being novel.l82start wrote: maybe i understood the Burt Gummer caricature wrong.... but i saw it as a well done, playful, humorous and somewhat self depreciating (b movie) take on the survivalist gun nut... did i miss something?

I'm with MG on this. The first Tremors was fresh and funny, the second was kind of tedious. I stopped after two.MachineGhost wrote:No, I think the problem is he's just not as amusing in the sequels. It gets predictably old rather than continuing to being novel.
An interesting aspect of the original, in light of the popularity of prepperdom today, is how un-prepared they all were for their fictitious SHTF event.

Re: Has there ever been a comedic prepper film?
no disagreement that the movies got progressively worse after the first one, I maybe wasn't as disappointed in that because i watched the others more as a "B movie fan" and was expecting them to be bad as part of the charm...
