I read that article. I am not a fan of that decision at all. I never used intrade before but have gone on the website before. I'd have to see some pretty convincing arguments for why you can't allow private citizens to bet their money however they want to.

Gee, I'm sure glad Uncle Sam is looking out for me, relieving me of my responsibility to think. After all, the U.S. Government is a shining beacon of smart decisions, it's not as if they've consistently pissed away an incredible fortune on trivial and foolish expenses.

Thank god!
Now if government can pass a law that keeps me down to 2 coffees per day and requires I hit the gym at least 3x a week, I'll be a lot better off.

Your post may be tongue-in-cheek, but I honestly think laws that mandate a "healthy" lifestyle are just around the corner. We've already seen some at the state level (New York soda size limits, smoking bans). Recently there were some workers who were fired by their company because they failed to get their mandated flu shots. In all levels of our society it's becoming more acceptable for bodies of authority to take a controlling interest in our health. Obamacare and other forms of widespread health care cost sharing will simply accelerate this process. It's not a very large leap from punitively influencing behavior with taxes or fees to outright bans and/or mandates.TripleB wrote: Thank god!

This country was founded by people who were and had to be self reliant. But things have changed greatly and we have the entitlement mentality and to many this trend (which includes the above sentence) is desirable. I highly recommend This Perfect Day by Ira Levin (or Brave New World) especially to the liberals reading this. Prohibiting Intrade penalizes the smart would-be gamblers and rewards the dumb would-be gamblers. It's preventing a voluntary transfer of wealth from the dumb to the smart.
What's wrong with the free-market "tax" on stupidity that legalized skill-based gambling like Intrade provides? If you want less of something, tax it. I don't know about you, but I want a lot less stupidity out there.
