Easily Israel and Iran.  Israel will not wait until after Iran has a bomb, they will preempt.  So the question is simply how long till Iran gets a bomb.

The war cycle doesn't re-occur until 2014, so I think we still have some time left before the SHTF in the Middle East.

What is the Chinese shadow banking system? I've been busy reading about Huawei.

I agree with the Iran scenario but I wonder just how much of a fight they will be able to put up. I think that the blow to Iran, if and when it comes, could be debilitating, possibly including an EMP attack. I also believe that if it escalates beyond some wayward missiles out of Iran and Lebanon and Syria that a second blow would/could be that aforementioned EMP attack or a more extensive air assault on their means of making war. I have also read recently here http://www.debka.com/article/22422/US-s ... o-it-alone that Iran may be less than 2 months from acquiring nuclear weapons, which would mean that Israel would have to act very soon (well before the US elections) to obtain maximum leverage with an unwilling Obama. Actually, Obama might want to go along with this attack to help get reelected.

it might involve some or all of the other options in the poll happening, or some we haven't thought of, but they will amount to little or nothing compared to the hype they get at the time, things will steadily get worse at about the same rate but people will get used to it, some things will get better occasionally but it will revert to the mean quickly. Doomsday will come and go, but its passing will go unmarked and unrecognized ...

I would say a solar flare that blows out all the non-shielded electronic devices in the world or perhaps a flu pandemic.

Any politically-driven disaster tends to pass pretty quickly (i.e., usually within a period of a few decades or less) and can normally be recovered from when people wake up to what is happening.  It's hard to do the same thing with something like an asteroid that is heading toward earth.

Would said solar flare knock out my (gulp!) guitar amps?

Even though I stopped watching 'Revolution', yesterday I happened to come across this on the wikipedia page for Stephen King's doomsday-via-disease novel, 'The Stand':
Cultural References
in Episode 3 of Revolution, the character of Miles Matheson introduces himself and his companion as "Stu Redman" and "Frannie.
(two main characters from the novel)

I still don't know what the China shadow banking option means.  ???
