Cuba to end Soviet-style economy and will implement market friendly policies

Post by MachineGhost »

Cuba adopted a new tax code this week and said it would loosen regulations on some state companies while turning others into cooperatives, as one of the world's last Soviet-style economies moves in a more market-friendly direction.

I imagine being frozen in the 1950s sucks more and more the farther from 1950 you get.

Does that mean I'll finally be able to get my hands on sone Cuban cigars?

Does anyone notice that much of a difference between Cuban and Dominican cigars?

It's astonishing that Castro was able to hold onto power for over 50 years.

I don't know what kind of country the Cuban people want, but something tells me that they would enjoy a little more economic prosperity and political freedom than they have experienced under Castro's regime.

Imagine all the old classic 1950s cars they could sell to nostalgic collectors.  They could get enough $$ to buy Lexuses.

I wish I could be frozen in the 1950's. And that desire gets stronger and stronger the farther we get from that decade. Yeah, there are some advantages to the early 21st century, like modern medicine. But on balance the last few decades have been pretty ugly.

What aspects of a 1950s lifestyle do you find most appealing vs. today?  (I didn't experience the 50s.)
