How do ETFs factor into this? Anything different for ETF consideration?

If the ETF is broadly based and not doing any kind of gimmicky stock screening it is likely fine. Vanguard, iShares and StateStreet for instance offer very broadly based total stock market or S&P 500 ETFs that are very tax efficient. I tend to favor Vanguard ETFs due to the their structure and track record, but all of these choices are within a few basis points of each other and are light years ahead of any actively managed fund you could use.

+1 for Vanguard. VTI is pretty much the benchmark.
