Mint.com

Post by Greg »

Anybody on here use mint.com?

I really like it for the most part (especially for being free). Good for being able to see all your accounts all at once and I feel reasonably safe about the data. Also good for when trying to determine when credit card bills are coming due and being able to track expenses and such.

Use it and love it. I feel like it's better for tracking credit and debit card transactions since its investment module is pretty basic, but it's definitely an excellent tool to add to your toolbox.

I definitely agree about the credit cards and such. And just for having balances on savings accounts as well. You're right about the investing portion though and I feel it could use some work on their end. Also I really like their "Way to Save" column. I found a few promotional credit card offers that I used to get "free" money (one of these where you spend $500 in 3 months on things you would already purchase and you get $200 back for a 40% return).

I also like the goals for seeing how well I'm doing for my retirement stuff but lately my "month ahead" has been getting smaller and smalller due to the market.  :( Goes to show I need to follow the PP more closely (too much in stocks right now).

I use Mvelopes and I really like it.  I feel like Mint is designed to look back at what you've already spent, whereas Mvelopes allows you to plan ahead.  I think they have a way to import your investments, but I am not using it.  It doesn't seem like it is all that great, and my portfolio spreadsheet is working pretty well.  There is a free version and also a pay version.  The pay version allows you to create more envelopes, has a bill pay feature, and I think there's something else.  I ended up going with the pay version because I needed more envelopes.  In any case, have a look; maybe you will like it.

I wish mint had a better support for Treasury direct and especially a way to track gold. It would take a day to code, at most. Hell they could even put in some gold bullion ads... Until they provide this feature the investments portion isn't relevant to me.

I was thinking that same thing about Mint. Perhaps they aren't putting it in the code for gold because higher government powers are trying to keep you from thinking of gold as an investment/protection of wealth and more just a shiny rock. It's all a conspiracy ;-)

Also I am checking out Mvelopes now. I'm trying to see what the differences are between it in Mint. It looks along the same lines but perhaps there are certain features unique to Mvelopes that Mint doesn't have. Thanks for posting that. I always like reading about what other people find.

Mint actually used to support TreasuryDirect but then the plug got pulled, probably due to that key code card needed to access an account.  Mint was a lot better before Quicken bought them out and it starting going downhill.

Ahh gotcha. I was trying to get my Treasury Direct (with I and EE bonds) into Mint today but it seems like it wasn't really working. They said it was in "beta" mode but not sure how long it has been like that.

I've been using MINT for years, although not for investments. It's much more fun than checking credit cards separately.
Now that we can also add our own cash transactions, I use it even more frequently than before.

I love Mint.  We use it primarily to track our spending & net income per month, and its categorization tools have been really enlightening in helping us reduce our spending over time.
