Can you guess the commodity?

Post by dualstow »

"of last fall dealers in (country_name) quoted prices ranging from $33 to $133 a gram, which at the top end is double the price of gold and can exceed the price of cocaine."

I'll give the source and fill in the rest of the details later. Don't want to give it away prematurely.

I thought about that, but I don't think it would ever exceed the price of cocaine.

SteveGo got it: rhino horn. It's in this month's (March 2012 issue) National Geographic. The main buyers are in Vietnam, which only makes sense to me because it was banned in China. That's not to say China doesn't import it, but it's more difficult than in previous decades. There's a very sad photo of a hornless rhino at the beginning of the story, that had to be euthanized soon after it was discovered.

same thing...  byproduct of the whales lower digestive system/intestines, it can exit from either end,  it sells at around the same per gram price (give or take) as your rhino horn...

yep ugh....   but i wouldn't hesitate for a second to scoop  it up and drag it home if i found some on a beach, and what a great "how i made my first million" story you'd have to tell, while sitting around the gentleman's club sipping brandy and smoking cigars,
