All my iPads are so old that it's been many, many years since any of them were able to get any form of update.

Not to mention the email.

I just bought a new iPad and it seems like several steps backwards.

Better not advertise that you have very hackable out of date hardware and software. Sure hope you aren’t keeping revealing photos of your garden fertilizer collection process. AI will have a field day (pun intended).😉

At this point the only thing that they get used for is keeping score of my teams' softball games and book reading. Some email.

Not really connected that often to the internet.

the ipad OS update woes continue. Firefox for ipadOS doesn’t want to show all the tabs anymore. You can force it to by tapping Window, then Show All Tabs (downward stroke just to get the menu that includes Window). God knows what that keyboard shortcut is. I’ve tried everything.

But as soon as I open a new tab, all of the above disappears. Sometimes even the address bar vanishes so that I cannot paste an address in. Crazy.

You are just reinforcing why I will always be a computer-first person and any other device only when computer is not available. For me anything else but a computer is simply a supplement.

But good luck with your problem. I've just emerged out of being in Email Hell for 7 days and having to spent 35, 40 hours to diagnose the source of the problem, the extent of the problem, and solving it.

I hope all my Gyroscopic friends have survived the recent blizzard conditions across much of the US. At least we didn’t lose power in our neighborhood; just a lot of snow and sleet and ice. We have been on level 2 emergency since Sunday - basically means only emergency vehicles and approved snow removal vehicles allowed on the roads.

Stay safe, M. Wife and I just explored the city on foot. Not as lively as we’d hoped, but there were some happy dogs.

Yesterday just before noon I plugged in innumerable lights, power packs, telephone, music devices, reading devices .. in case no electricity. Also, turned temperature to 78 in this room so all in this room would absorb heat and then release if room no longer heated.

But no electricity outage so far at my house in Western MA.

The snow measured 12" at the back door and 10" at the front door. Have received a fair amount since and more is fairly heavily falling now.

My street is the main street in the area so it is the first one that the town plows.

I pretty much always assumed that they could, regardless of whatever they said in public.

I just checked to confirm that you are part of this forum's team.

Can any person on the team read any of private forum communications with one another?

That is important to know.

In Bogleheads once I established a level of communications with someone I requested we move it to email which is far easier to do than clunky forum private messages.

But now that I've received this arbitrary 2 week ban in Bogleheads I don't trust that they will not read my private messages in that forum.

So, asking it here since the same software is used at both places.

There is this whole thing with Apple iPhones that it's extremely difficult to get into anyone's texts on them? The police don't have the capability to do so. They have to request Apple to do so, who will only do it in extreme cases?

Getting back to my original question.

i ask it in the spirit of me not trusting those in charge at Bogleheads while trusting those who are here.

There they act extremely arbitrarily and is to adopt a stance of: they are the parents and we the children.

Not at all the case here. Xan only gets involved at the extremes and treats us all as adults. Total opposite form of moderation.

I have always tried to follow the advice of my employer:

There isn't any capability within phpbb for anybody, even admins, to read private messages. However, they are stored on the server in the database, and anybody with access to the database could go in and see them if they wanted.

In general, unless there is end-to-end encryption, which is you encrypting on your computer and the recipient decrypting on his, it is possible for people in the middle to read and modify your messages. (You can defend against modification without encryption by using signatures.)

Thanks for your quick response, Xan.

But the main message you are giving to me is that pshbb does not allow anyone involved in the forum administration to read anyone private messages. That was my main concern. Not fear from you but fear from the Bogleheads moderators who are so authoritarian in the way that they moderate. It seemed like it'd be a likely next step for them to read private emails if they could.

Yes, only the people who actually run the site would be able to read private messages, not run-of-the-mill moderators or even admins.

I don't like using PMs in forums, not because of privacy concerns, but because I don't usually keep track of it all. I'm on top of email. And Signal and other messaging apps.

My Mac mini is restarting all the time now. It's ancient. It might be my last Mac desktop, which makes me kind of sad. But not sad enough to buy another Mac. O0 Just sad because there are probably things I will fail to transfer over, and things (like text replacement/expansion) that I *can't* transfer over.

In both here and there .. private messages are my only ways of communicating with those in the forums.
