I usually buy the full 30 year bonds to get the max duration and volatility. But to do that I have to buy individual bonds. Which is kind of a hassle. I heard about these ETFs on the Meb Faber podcast recently.

Re: A new ETF for 30 year bonds
Darn. I was thinking about buying some VGLT as a bit of market timing before the next big stock crash (which I always get wrong).
Average “effective maturity” is 22 years, but the duration is no good. (EDV’s is 24 years). I will look no further.

So you’re looking at UTHY.
Interesting. But the effective duration is almost the same as VGLT? 15.77Underlying Bond:
The US Treasury auctions a new 30-Year Treasury bond each quarter. The auction will determine the coupon rate of each new on-the-run' bond. Once the auction is complete and can be settled, UTHY will sell the currently held, old 30-Year US Treasury and roll into the newly issued 30-Year US Treasury.

The effective duration of a new issue 30 year Treasury is in the 16-17 year range. Remember duration decreases as coupon increases.
Only way to do any better is to buy STRIPS, since their coupon is 0 (or an ETF like EDV that contains them).
