For the rest of the world Trump is potentially a very good thing, to be celebrated/encouraged (seeing someone shoot themselves in the foot also provides some comedy/entertainment).
Oh well. I suppose the UK could use some schadenfreude, especially after reading this book review yesterday in ‘Foreign Affairs’:

Seven Children: Inequality and Britain's Next Generation
BY DANNY DORLING. Hurst, 2024, 320 pp.
Not since the Great Depression has inequality in the United Kingdom been as high as it is today. In this regard, the country more closely resembles the United States than its European neighbors. No one has been hit harder than the young; the United Kingdom has the most steeply rising level of child poverty of all developed countries. This disturbing book, inspired by the famous televi-sion series Seven Up!, follows seven British children born in 2018. Their parents include a nurse, a trucker, and a shop owner. Touching portraits of the children set the stage for shocking statistics. Compared with two decades ago, a British child's chance of being homeless has more than doubled. The same is true for a child's chance of going without fresh food. Meanwhile, the likelihood of attending a private school or enjoying upward social mobility has halved. In the absence of comprehensive reforms, the future for British children looks even bleaker.

As far as I know this is unprecedented in our history!
;) And you were okay with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton having a server in a bathroom.

Are you thinking of Tim Walz, the Democrat VP candidate? He is not involved in this.
Waltz refers to Michael Waltz, the Trump administration's National Security Advisor.

Your initial instinct that it was something fake, written by AI, when it would only take 30 seconds to educate yourself made me think of this (a new signature line?):

Well, at least it’s clear that using nongovernmental means of communication has a precedence.

Still, it’s obviously an egregious error and goes a step further since as Vinny pointed out, I don’t think Clinton forwarded sensitive info to an outsider.
The thing that bothers me the most is that the Atlantic journalist is being criticized. He’s doing his job, and what kind of person would he be if he’d kept quiet about it? Also, he didn’t leak the details a la wikileaks but only the existence of said details. That’s the way to do it.

Some city boroughs have social housing occupancy levels in excess of 70% by individuals that weren't born in England. Much of social care is being provided by younger migrants in support of older/infirm migrants. Largely a consequence of collective insurance - free (at the point of use) medical/health care, schooling ...etc. that is relatively rare elsewhere and as such is a migration magnet - that is being overwhelmed. The concept however is IMO sound and caring. Former generations didn't really need savings in order to retire, bought their own home (paid off a mortgage) and got by on a state pension with health/medical cover/care covered (free). With some savings (typically in cash-deposit accounts) and a additional occupational pension and retirement could be pretty 'comfortable'. There's a transition however to where former good levels of healthcare and education within cities have declined to levels where its more appropriate to 'go private' (self fund).

Inner city poverty levels have increased, predominately due to over-loading of demand/numbers, spoken English within city streets is also more commonly infrequently heard. Totally different to English countryside. Personally however I prefer city life, multi-culture diversity and 24/7 services/public transport and a degree of anonymity rather than 'quiet' village life.

My latest Facebook:

THE NON-RESPONSIBILITY OF TRUMP WORLD!!!!!

1) Anyone else in the military, any organization, any business ... guilty of such GROSS dereliction of duty as Trump was for 3 hours during the heights of January 6th --- IMMEDIATELY FIRED -- no questions asked!

2) On the campaign trail ... did we not hear King Liar constantly bleating that Biden never fired anyone? For this unprecedented leak in our country's 250 year history ... .who has been fired so far?

NO ONE IS RESPONSIBLE IN TRUMP WORLD!

"Mistakes were made. Let's learn from them. Let's move on."

19 people are in on a chat and not one of the other 18 has the sense to ask ... "Who is JG".

How many other times has this happened that we do not know about?

The level of incompetency, lack of taking responsibility, lack of preparation is again witnessed by a general's response to a Representative's question: "I'm not wearing my glasses."

You go to a hearing and don't bring your glasses??!!!

Doesn’t anyone think that Jeffrey Goldberg “spilling the beans”, perhaps to get a big story for the Trump haters, is a national security issue, possibly helping the enemy? I do agree that Waltz inadvertently (?) adding him to the chat was a huge error.

I would say it goes more like 95 steps further than anything I ever saw in the Clinton email scandal. Here - you can read the text chain for yourself and prepare to be amazed: https://www.reddit.com/r/interestingasf ... om_signal/

Coming back to whataboutism, I'm not trying to be a smartass, I've just never fully understood the logic of it.
Is it that the existence of a previous foul, however comparable, counteracts the current foul, as though only the first foul counts?
Or is it a partisan thing, where you can point to a foul committed by the other team that effectively cancels out the present foul committed by your team? Paper, scissors, rocks?
I just don't get it.
Either way, the two fouls here are not even close to being comparable, regardless of what team you're rooting for. I can only imagine what the Europeans thought when they read the Euro-bashing in the text chain. Crazy stuff

Nah, those are of course straw definitions.

I think one man’s context is another man’s whataboutism. Maybe there’s a spectrum. In my opinion, it’s context provided in order to illuminate hyprocrisy. If you thought Clinton’s emails were no big deal (like Bernie Sanders), but are outraged by Waltz’ mistake, you just might be a hypocrite (“you” means one, not you personally).

Your analogy is improper.

There are two levels which are getting mixed together.

1) What is proper to use for official government communications? Both can be accused of being off on this one. Also, just recently I remembered that Colin Powell did the same as Hillary in his role as Secretary of State. But because he was one of them Republicans / Conservatives seem to have quickly forgotten that.

2) What was transmitted to someone who should have never seen it. In this case has anyone made the case that Hillary did this?

So, two issues.

What medium was being used to discuss and providing information to someone who should not have received it.

The major was committing the extreme incompetent error of not ONE person out of 18 legitimate participants being in a chat for days on end and not one person being tasked with or even being curious as to who all the other occupants were.

I can guarantee you that if I was one of them I, on my own, would have determined who each person was and would have asked, "Who is JG among us?"

That's such a basic error among each of the 18. Shows a complete lack of attention to simple detail. If they all cannot take care of such trivial details as that ... how are any of them trusted with far more complex details?

But should that be any surprise when the first 10 qualifications for being in a position for this president is unquestioning loyalties with all the other qualifications coming after those first 10?

If that is the group who are on Fox News tell me why I should watch when Fox paid a fine of $800 million as part of admitting that they were an entertainment show and not a serious news show.

You never struck me as someone who'd spend his time on such frivolous entertainment.
