US Citizen / Military Vet detained in ICE raid
US Citizen / Military Vet detained in ICE raid
It's not uncommon that TSA staff don't know that Puerto Ricans are US Citizens... often people with PR driver's licenses are asked to show their passports. This is a recurring problem.
Well now, the ign'ance has been put on ICE.

I know there’s a constant temptation to compare Trump to Hitler and his minions to Nazis, but while the story above is unfortunate, these people are not being shipped off to extermination camps.
I’m sure there are going to be more stories like this. Hopefully, ICE will get better at their job as time goes on.

Re: US Citizen / Military Vet detained in ICE raid
I have a friend who is quite obviously Hispanic. He feels he's had fair warning, and now keeps a laminated color copy of his passport and birth certificate on him.
Although we are both thinking the Federal Travel (REAL) ID standard that DMVs have rolled out with the gold star in the corner of the driver's license are supposed to meet that purpose in theory.
But I suppose if you're in a high risk profile group and you're wearing a belt, no harm in throwing on some suspenders too, just in case the officer is super enthusiastic.
Is it upsetting to have to do things like this? Yes. But is it more upsetting to be detained? Yes.
I have the REAL ID, but maybe I need to consider the suspenders too, given my natural all year round tan.

I get profiled all the time when flying. I think this came up some years ago when Ocho was worried about some Iranian-American students. Before 9/11, everyone assumed I was Italian. After, Arab.

Re: US Citizen / Military Vet detained in ICE raid
I had to bring my Passport (or equivalent) in to Texas DPS to get my DL renewed last month. If Real ID isn't enough for them, then lawsuit coming. They should know that.
Re: US Citizen / Military Vet detained in ICE raid
So... where should a Native American be deported to? 1, 2, 3,... the answer is... er...
Navajo Citizens Facing Identity Challenges During ICE Deportation Raids
The Trump administration’s intensified deportation efforts have created unexpected challenges for Navajo citizens living in urban areas like Phoenix. As the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) began widespread raids in major cities across the country following the start of President Donald Trump’s second term, concerns have surfaced about Native Americans being mistaken for undocumented immigrants.
On Friday, Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren addressed these concerns during a broadcast on the tribal radio station KTNN. He reported receiving troubling accounts of Navajo citizens experiencing “negative and sometimes traumatizing encounters” with federal agents targeting undocumented individuals in the Southwest.

The natives should have deported us while they had the chance.
Well, they tried. Some of them did try.

So you think this is going to escalate to extermination?

I am obviously not who you directed your question to. But I answer no.

No, it's performative politics. But it has real consequences for some individuals and families. But since those people will be labeled as "a very small number" then it will characterized as All for The Greater Good. Not really the party of personal liberty, in my view. I voted Republican 1980-2000 but then stopped after Gulf War II and all of this "Homeland Security" Scheit and getting felt up trying to get on an airplane.

I suppose, Dieter. I just think that if we compare every form of heavy-handedness to Nazis, then “nazi” loses all meaning.

Re: US Citizen / Military Vet detained in ICE raid
It's not even a contest. One can never be too hyperbolic if you are describing anything about Trump.
I've said this many times. Maybe never here, though.
If you wrote a book in 2012 that had every detail of what has been Trump from the 2015 elevator appearance to today .... every book company would reject your book as "unrealistic", "unbelievable", "pure fantasy". Yet here we are. All living in his personal reality show. Except it's not a show. It's real.

On the bright side, President Trump has done nothing yet that personally adversely affects me, my neighborhood, my family or 99.99% of the United States citizens.yankees60 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 27, 2025 7:56 pmIt's not even a contest. And now they're going to collect all paper copies of said hypothetical book and burn them and scrub all references to it off of the Internet.

Lucky you. My wife's oncologist can no longer communicate with her colleagues at NIH. Her life depends on surfing the waves of the latest thing in blood cancer research.Mountaineer wrote: ↑Tue Jan 28, 2025 5:13 am On the bright side, President Trump has done nothing yet that personally adversely affects me, my neighborhood, my family or 99.99% of the United States citizens.
Everyone thinks they're not going to be affected, until suddenly they are. She didn't plan to have cancer. No one plans that. Yet
here. we. are.
There are no "other people". I know people who personally knew US Presidents - on both sides of the aisle. We're all separated by a few degrees. If you start arbitrarily running roughshod over large groups of people, eventually those standing on the sidelines are going to lose a toe or an eye.
I'm not advocating anarchy. I believe in laws. But I believe they should be administered fairly and humanely.
Back to the original topic... illegal immigration... sweeping up migrants is a lot like arresting sex workers. What about the Johns? Where are the CEOs of meatpacking companies who are employing these people? I don't see them on the news... oh, I get it... 1099 contractors (wink, wink).
I guarantee you, if the money evaporates, workers will lose interest and go home. But right now it's just putting on a Hunger Games cruelty show to throw enough red meat to the audience to keep their blood lust satisfied, whilst not really going after the root cause... which is always money flows.

How do you burn a hypothetical book? Is this like demonstrating the sound of one hand clapping?

Assuming a population of 330 million ... that leaves only 33,000 affected.Mountaineer wrote: ↑Tue Jan 28, 2025 5:13 amOn the bright side, President Trump has done nothing yet that personally adversely affects me, my neighborhood, my family or 99.99% of the United States citizens.yankees60 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 27, 2025 7:56 pmIt's not even a contest. During Biden's four years what did he did that personally adversely affected you, your neighborhood, your family, and what % of the United States citizens?

I'd say maybe. My tax dollars went to a lot of stuff I don't support with the NUMBER ONE item being allowing/supporting killing of unborn human beings. Number two is my tax dollars went to support illegals vs. our citizens who are homeless. We shall see if anything changes or if the corruption is too deep and ingrained to overcome in a meaningful way.yankees60 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 28, 2025 9:56 amAssuming a population of 330 million ... that leaves only 33,000 affected.Mountaineer wrote: ↑Tue Jan 28, 2025 5:13 amOn the bright side, President Trump has done nothing yet that personally adversely affects me, my neighborhood, my family or 99.99% of the United States citizens.yankees60 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 27, 2025 7:56 pmIt's not even a contest.
