Linda Ronstadt is high on my list of top all-time female vocalists.
Look at that list of Performers! No wonder why she and the band sound so great in this performance.

Linda: Classy, simply dressed but elegant, seemed humble in dealing with her band and the audience, authentic.
CMA: Only a bit of country, hosts tried to be funny but mainly failed, extremely glitzy, tattoos abounded, tiresome seeing women with puffy lips and boobs on display, fake. I thought three performers seemed real: Chris Stapleton, Kacy Musgrave, Brooks and Dunn. Sorry I wasted the time to watch.
44 years passing said/showed a lot about the degradation of our culture. My two cents.

Re: YouTube Junkie
They’re not for everyone. Do you like other prog rock like Yes, Emerson Lake & Palmer and that?
I have to listen to ‘Turn it On Again’ at least a dozen times a year. It’s the most triumphant sounding song about a depressing & pathetic character I’ve ever heard.
You don’t like Peter Gabriel either?
Saved your Ronstadt concert to a playlist called ‘Vinny’ for later.
↳ damn, I forgot that HBO = Home Box Office

I've never seen a CMA awards show. Or, the Adedemy Awards. Or, Emmy. Or, anything else, aside from a few MTV Awards shows in the mid-80s.Mountaineer wrote: ↑Mon Nov 25, 2024 5:19 amMy reflections on the Linda Ronstadt performance above and the recent CMA awards show:yankees60 wrote: ↑Sun Nov 24, 2024 4:27 pmAs soon as I saw you'd responded to the topic I knew you'd be saying the above. But is it fair to compare a concert to an Awards show? Two different audiences.

I did not know that they were even considered progressive rock. They came out much later than did Emerson, Lake, Palmer, who I saw at least once, if not twice. Loved them. Genesis cannot compare to them.

Re: YouTube Junkie
How dare you, Sir
Genesis is a few years older than ELP. The, uh, genesis of Genesis goes back to 1967. They were a very strange flavor of prog rock in the 70s, eventually morphing into a pop band when Collins replaced Gabriel on vocals.

I see from Wikipedia that they were from 1967. But somehow they were unknown to me until about 1973. Did they come out with some major record then?dualstow wrote: ↑Mon Nov 25, 2024 4:56 pm

Re: YouTube Junkie
I love Selling England By the Pound, but I have no idea how it was received when it came out, as I was too young. If I had to guess, I’d say the next one, Lamb Lies Down, (‘74) was the big one for their fans. It really is something.
Darn, I wanted to put the keyboard solo to ‘In the cage’ here, but I hate all the versions I see on youtube. Where is the one I like?! Well, it’s probably in this thread somewhere.
Consolation prize: I found this from when Chris Cornell passed away.

Re: YouTube Junkie
Thank you for the Linda Ronstadt concert, Vinny. I enjoyed it. (I also realized I’ve been erroneously pronouncing a second N in her surname for 40 years).
I began with “The Led Zeppelins” - Led Zeppelin II album, which is not jazz but just that album reimagined as something from the 50’s. Hilarious.

Oh, I like them a lot. I think I must have discovered them via satellite radio, which I don’t have anymore.
Fun band to listen to.
Not that it matters, but I thought the woman was Thai for the longest time because of the band name. She’s not.

It's amazing to me how much new music, movies, books, and so on appear every year. Every week. I discover music that I like a lot that's from 20 years ago. Wonder how I did not know about it for all those years.
