I just stumbled upon this video that shows some scientific experiments with gold.

I especially enjoyed the section with acids dissolving gold. Best I could tell, they could not destroy the gold. They only break it down into smaller particles which I assume must just be more pure gold than the .999 gold they were dissolving.
