I think Fox News is a great example of what wealthy insiders do to maintain the status quo....they obfuscate, divide, and scapegoat. My guess is that if things get really miserable in our kleptocracy....oops...I mean "democracy" the likely solution will be fascism. Then what, outside a citizen's dividend, do you see as a solution? I see nothing short of fixed value being provided to every citizen accomplishing much to avoid said distopian future.
If the bottom 80% are mieserable in our democracy, I think that will put great force on our elected officials to do something about it.

doodle,
I'll agree, but to be fair, MSNBC has "outfoxed" Fox at this point. Not because they necessarily skew facts more, but they're more blatantly and consistently one-sided. At least at Fox you have a handful of moderate real journalists. I wonder if MSNBC has one.

Moda,
MSNBC is certainly not a non-partisan news source. I think slowly most educated Americans realize that everything that is heard through mainstream media should be taken with a healthy dose of skepticism as to its validity and truth. The danger with Fox (in addition to completely making up an alternate reality) is that they target an audience that seems to take the BS that Oreilly and Hannity spew nightly as undisputable fact. They combine this with an atmosphere of confusion and danger and then use xenophobia and fascism to provide a solution to the unsettling feeling that they just fabricated. It is equivalent to a Reichstag fire every evening! Granted, Fox does maintain some semblance of a genuine news company by keeping Chris Wallace on board and by bringing on liberal guests to batter about and abuse.

O'Reilly's annual "War on Christmas" specials are some of the most nausiating media I've ever seen.
Then he proceeds to bring on Dennis Miller, a comedian, to offer his "take" on current events.
To round it all off, we get a dose of "Pinheads & Patriots" to further simplify our political thoughts.

Why are you watching this stuff?
Q: “Do you have funny shaped balloons?”
A: “Not unless round is funny.”

MT,
To say I "watch it" is a stretch... A couple times a week I'll spend a little time on MSNBC or Fox more for entertainment value than anything... Over the years that's added up to memorizing their schticks and putting patterns together.

Re: Where Has Austerity Helped Restore an Economy to Health?
FoxNews presents news as news and opinion as opinion. NBC, CBS, ABC, PBS, CNN, MSNBC, BBC present news as opinion and opinion as news.
Re: Where Has Austerity Helped Restore an Economy to Health?
Reub,
CNN is much more legitimate real news than Fox is. Even Fox's "news" programming outside of Beck & Hannity presents things as facts that are simply opinions in disguise.
Further, with MSNBC, is there any doubt that Maddow, Matthews, and everyone else on at night is left-wing? To say they pretend not to have an opinion is simply ridiculous. They wear their political bias on their sleeve even more than Fox does. I would agree that MSNBC is, on average, worse than Fox, but they don't pretend to be anything but incredibly biased.
Fox's slogan: Fair & Balanced. We Report, You Decide
MSNBC's slogan: Green is Universal.
MSNBC may be the lot of more biased jerks, but Fox is the true fraud. Neither of which are as informative as "real fake news" such as Colbert & Stewart.

Re: Where Has Austerity Helped Restore an Economy to Health?
I laughed out loud as well. But, Reub is actually correct. Though, the devil is in the details...Indices wrote:LOLReub wrote: FoxNews presents news as news and opinion as opinion. NBC, CBS, ABC, PBS, CNN, MSNBC, BBC present news as opinion and opinion as news.
Fox has far more opinion programming than news programming. Officially speaking, Fox News has 10 daily hours of opinion programming, compared with 6 hours of their pure news programming — with the rest of the day devoted to a mixture of news and opinion. Once Shepherd Smith goes off the air at 8PM, it's all opinion from that point forward. This is a key issue, because their ratings are highest during prime time.
Those 10 daily opinion hours are all hosted by conservatives with a heavy conservative bias.
Perhaps one could argue that the 6 hour news portion of their daily schedule is fair and balanced (though, Wallace all but admitted on the Daily Show that Fox provides a conservative bias to "balance" out the other networks), but I don't think anyone could possibly argue that the 10 daily hours of opinion programming is anything but conservative. The largest share of their conservative opinion hours is during prime time — when the viewership is highest.
It's quite clear that Fox's daily schedule is far more weighted to opinion than actual news.
