I think the Defense Production Act is just the trendy new thing to invoke nowadays for all things Covid-related.
Trump invoked the DPA last March to force GM to crank out more ventilators, then again in April to force 3M, GE, and Medtronic to crank out more N-95 masks and to force meat-processing plants to remain open.
Trump also said in December that he would invoke the DPA to make companies produce more vaccine doses if necessary, but he didn't do it before the end of his term. Looks like Biden just picked that up where Trump left off.
I find the very idea of calling our national Covid response "national defense" instead of "public health" kind of amusing. Reminds me of how the Interstate Commerce Clause of the Constitution is used to creatively justify various interference by the federal government that has very little to do with actual interstate commerce.
