Thinking more about DIY.
In the other thread, I mentioned changing my own oil in my cars.
In a similar vein, I also roast my own coffee. This has turned out to be the second most enlightening discovery of the year, right under the HB PP in terms of importance to my life. Our local overstock grocery store ran out of Peet's Major Dickason Blend coffee beans, forcing us to either buy it at full retail (never!) or seek other alternatives, I did the typical internet search, and learned about buying green coffee, and roasting it at home.
You can buy great green coffee at 1/3 the price, and roast it yourself. You don't even need a fancy coffee roaster. It turns out that one of those air popcorn poppers is ideal for the job, and costs almost nothing. We already had one, which we never used.
But, the best of this is that the coffee is nothing short of ambrosia. You roast it how you like it, let it mature a little overnight, and the next day you have amazing coffee. If I were rich like you other folks, I will still roast coffee myself, just for the flavor.
The only downside, is that the roasting process is a bit "aromatic." I do all my roasting in the garage, with the door open.
I buy online from sweetmarias.com. They have plenty of online tutorial stuff, if this idea intrigues you.
