Trump firing everyone

Post by doodle »

Ok, DHS chief of cyber security now terminated according to Trump. Apparently Trump didn't like what he had to say. For those people that supported Trump before, can you now see why he resembles a dictator like Chavez? Can you understand why having someone with the personality of Trump in a role like president is so dangerous?

By my count only about 64 days to go. Let the countdown BEGIN!

doodle, I completely respect the right to hold whatever opinions one wishes. That said, I will offer a bit of caution, presented with the best of intentions: First, it is almost always better to run toward what one needs or where one needs to go rather than away from something distasteful or repugnant; it us usually better to build up rather than to tear down. Second, be careful what is passionately wished for, there are usually mounds of unintended consequences whether for an individual or a collection of individuals (government). I realize this is rather simplistic, even cliche like, but I think those two principles have served humanity rather well.

I suspect Chavez may be lurking just over the horizon for us if Congress does not resume its duty of legislating, the Supremes do not stop legislating instead of judging by the Constitution, and the President does not stop with all the ruling by executive orders. I sometimes feel we are currently ruled by the thousands upon thousands of regulations, enacted by unelected bureaucrats.
Put not your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no help. Psalm 146:3

It's a textbook authoritarian move to get rid of anyone who refuses to go along with your propaganda. Sounds like a tactic that China's government would use to suppress the truth.

That's what's so confusing to me. This is the type of behavior you read about with figures like Stalin and Hitler but none of that phases his adherents.

Yeah, it's like it's ok to have an authoritarian... as long as that authoritarian is one of "us" and not one of "them". It's ok to destroy democracy... as long as it leads to "us" being in power and not "them". It's ok to impede on people's rights.... provided it is "their" rights that are impeded upon, not "ours". Whatever forces "them" to do what "we" want is fair game. But the moment "they" try to make "us" do anything... it's time for civil war!!!!

The "us" vs "them" tactic that Trump loves to play is a very slippery and dangerous slope.

Anyone who doesn't think Trump won't be implementing some level of scorched earth policy is deluding themselves. I just hope it can be contained to head shaking and just counting the days, vs. something really significant.

I just keep hoping and praying that his rushed bid to open up the arctic drilling contracts in Alaska doesn't make it through before he leaves office. In a way, this is an admission of defeat, that he has to try to rush this through.

He just cannot do things on his own. He needs others to carry out these things. Even some of those will finally reach their limits and either quit or not carry out what he wants.

Vinny
Not if he continues to fire anyone that would "reach their limits and either quit or not carry out what he wants". He demands total 100% loyalty or GTFO.

True. But how much real power does a press secretary have?

Vinny
true? Really?
wow i never would have guessed that in America people are actually willing to kill people they disagree with in a gas chamber..
this is the kind of BS that creates the kind of division in this country, that those creating it are so bent out of shape about...

Simon, sorry I honestly disagree with you. I think you underestimate how deeply disturbed these individuals are. This is not a political issue for me. This is about basic human ethics and honesty. I'd group some democratic reps in with Trump and his inner circle.

Do I think Trump is capable of gassing people? Yes, I do. He is a completely deranged human.

Why would people in america be so different from in Russia, China, Korea, Germany....if people there and in many other places are capable of killing others they disagree with why not here in 2020? Thank goodness our institutions have held up so far...although they are under relentless attack.

i don't know what to say BEYOND.... GOOD GRIEF..
I'm surprised by your reaction...I mean, he even said he could shoot someone in the middle of 5th ave and not lose a single supporter. Why do you think he's any different from any other authoritarian type who makes his opponents disappear? This isn't exactly a rare event in history.

Yes, Trump the "authoritarian" who was one of the only U.S. politicians not to expand his authority during the Covid-1984 crisis.

To address the OP, is Trump breaking any laws by firing people in his executive branch? If not, then why the comparisons with murderous authoritarians like Stalin and Hitler?

My only question is other than for retribution (whatever that means in this case) what would be the goal of firing, say, the Sec of Defense 40 some days before you are leaving office and he's going to be replaced anyway?

It would be interesting to see the conversations on this forum if the roles were reversed, and if it were a Democrat in office doing these things. "Us" vs "them" as a form of divide and conquer is an effective political strategy that Trump has used masterfully.

His goal in firing the guy is irrelevant to the claim made in the OP and follow-up posts that Trump is similar to dictators and authoritarians like Chavez, Stalin, and Hitler.

If Trump is acting within the law and is not overstepping his authority within the executive branch, it's just plain silly to claim that he's an authoritarian with murderous intent.

Sure. But I do think it is relevant, maybe not to the level doodle is implying, but it is just another datapoint for those of us that dislike him, and our (my) dislike of his style that winning only matters if everyone else loses. And loses bigly.

I am a little worried he will just continue to make the transition as difficult as possible. No law against that, but continues the un-presidentialness.

You mean like how the outgoing Obama administration made the transition as difficult as possible for Trump by spying on his campaign and initiating the Russian collusion hoax?
