The Crazy Horse Memorial

For anyone who is not familiar with the Crazy Horse Memorial in South Dakota, below is a nice photo.



I enjoy looking in on this project from time to time.  They have been working on it for about 63 years and as you can tell they still have a long way to go.

In a world where things change very quickly, it's kind of fun to see a project that is moving at a more leisurely pace.

I went to the memorial about 25 years ago when it was still just a big rock with a horse's head painted on the side.  I'm sure that when they finished the face it made it a more fun destination to visit.







As a bonus image, here is a photo at nearby Mount Rushmore of the little known "Hall of Records" behind the faces that was originally intended to house various original U.S. governmental documents.

That is literally true of this project.  The sons and grandsons (I think) of the original sculptor are finishing the work their father started in 1948.

This is correct.  I visited there with my young girls this past summer.  The film they show of the making of the monument was fascinating.  All money used by the family to build Crazy Horse comes from concession sales. The family building Crazy Horse has always refused any government aid or corporate sponsorship.  Got to have a lot of respect for all they have accomplished.

BTW all of Mt Rushmore would easily fit several times inside the head of Crazy Horse.
