I am ABSOLULELY terrified to call any large organization on the phone It feels like I need to have available a full hour set aside to get anything done when calling them.

WSJ lets you cancel your subscription online through their Customer Center (click your name in the upper-right of the screen to expand the drop-down menu, then select Customer Center).

I started to cancel online a couple of weeks ago but accepted one of their counteroffers ($10/month app-only subscription) just before the final cancellation screen.

This is their policy with all subscriptions. Agree it's lame; they do that to make it more difficult on you. I cancelled a subscription there a few years back and getting thru was no issue. They try and talk you out of leaving, but are not obnoxious about it.
I'm also thinking of the oftentimes extreme wait times you get when you call one of the large organization.
Even smaller ones.

I am never shy to tell the representative that I'm talking to to pass on to a higher up that I was extremely dissatisfied with the long wait.
